康乃馨的悄悄话

Khmer mother

Khmer mother

Let’s go Cambodia – arrival in Siem Reap

Sua s‘dei! (hello in Khmer) Early of April, I was on a 3-day and 2-night tour in Cambodia with friends. I knew three days would be too short to explore the tranquil beauty of the land of most magnificent temples in the world. So I’d decided to take as many photos as possible. The trip had turned to a training ground for photography.

Most friends on this trip including I had not been to Cambodia, so we knew next to nothing of the country. On our arrival in Siem Reap, we were so excited and anticipated of what was to come. As for my first impression when we arrived, Cambodia would be similar to Thailand of its architecture, culture and art, until I studied the distinctiveness of the country and people on the three days exploration.

Well, I have to spare more time to do the photos and writings these days. Let’s have a quick through of our packed itinerary:

Day 1

  • arrived Siem Reap
  • visited Ta Prohm Temple
  • visited Angkor Wat
  • took bus to Phnom Penh

Day 2

  • visited Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum
  • shopped at Russian Market
  • visited Killing Fields
  • Mekong River cruise

Day 3

  • shopped at Russian Market
  • shopped Central Market
  • goodbye Cambodia

May all beings be happy. Sharing some shots of the arrival in Siem Reap.

RM400 of Chinese New Year couplets for 2011

By Chinese calligraphy, Involvement

Early this month, the organising committees of Chun Nuan Ren Jian, Jia Jia Tie Chun Lian (春暖人间、家家贴春联) handed an amount of RM90,000 donation to St John Bachang Haemodialysis Centre. This amount of money was collected from the sale of Chinese New Year couplets prior to Chinese New Year of this year.

The event which held annually is a great success. Over the 8 years, this fundraising event has collected a total amount of RM567,000. Most of the volunteers were Chinese calligraphers consisted of senior citizens and students actively helping to write the couplets and promote to the public.

Besides promoting Chinese calligraphy and encouraging Chinese households to paste couplets on the gateposts or door panels, every year the event aims to support St. John Bachang Haemodialysis Centre, an NGO which charges only RM10 per dialysis treatment for patients who suffer from kidney disease. The money collected from the sale will be donated to the centre and help to ease the finance burdens.

During the handing over of the donation to centre, the organizing committees expressed gratitude to all who volunteered for the event and to public including schools and societies who showed their great supports. Without such support, the event could not be as successful.

And here in juesatta, we helped to promote the Chinese couplets too as of last year. We would like to thank to our friends for the support as we managed to collect an amount of RM400 from the sale of the Chinese couplets. The fund collected here had been handed to the organising committees in March.

Once again thank you and may all beings be happy.

Earth Day 2011

April 22 - Earth Day

April 22 - Earth Day

The first Earth Day, on April 22, 1970, activated 20 million Americans from all walks of life and is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement. The passage of the landmark Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and many other groundbreaking environmental laws soon followed. Growing out of the first Earth Day, Earth Day Network (EDN) works with over 22,000 partners in 192 countries to broaden, diversify and mobilize the environmental movement. More than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.

But Earth Day Network does not stop there.

All of EDN’s activities, whether greening schools or promoting green economic policies at home and abroad, inform and energize populations so they will act to secure a healthy future for themselves and their children. With its partner organizations, EDN provides civic engagement opportunities at the local, state, national and global levels. At every turn, EDN works to broaden the definition of “environment” to include all issues that affect our health, our communities and our environment, such as greening deteriorated schools, creating green jobs and investment, and promoting activism to stop air and water pollution.

Over the last 40 years, EDN has executed successful environmental campaigns on issues ranging climate change and drinking water to voter registration and saving the whale. EDN is a recognized leader in creating civically–oriented innovative programs with partners outside of the environmental movement to tackle new challenges. Our core programs today focus on:

Greening Schools and Promoting Environmental Education

In partnership with the U.S. Green Building Council and The Clinton Foundation, EDN’s Green Schools Campaign, aims to green all of America’s K-12 schools within a generation.  Green schools save money, conserve energy and water, and foster better-performing, healthier students.  EDN’s Educator’s Network, used by over 30,000 teachers and administrators nationwide, provides innovative tools and resources to promote civic participation and to develop a sense of environmental responsibility among students of all ages. Together, EDN’s Education and Policy Teams organize federal and state legislative campaigns to green school facilities, improve school food, and enhance environmental education and civic engagement.  These include the Healthy Schools Act, No Child Left Inside, the National Civic Education Project, No Idling and the Climate Change Educators’ Grant.  EDN is also working internationally to promote green schools and improve environmental education.

Accelerating the Global Green Economy

For years, EDN has created dialogues and conferences engaging civil society, corporate, and government leaders on how to transition from a traditional, fossil fuel-based economy to one based on renewable energy, energy efficiency and other sustainable development principles. Our Global Day of Conversation provides local government leaders with an opportunity to engage with their constituents in a dialogue about renewable energy, sustainability and the green economy. The Creating Climate Wealth Conference co-hosted in 2010 with Sir Richard Branson’s Carbon War Room and now planned as an annual event, convenes the world’s most successful green business leaders. EDN’s newest initiative, Women and the Green Economy (WAGE™), is promoting the unique leadership role women bring to advancing green economic and investment policies at the international, national and local levels.

A Billion Acts of Green®

From greening schools to hosting town hall discussions on clean energy investment and green jobs, Earth Day Network leads its network in thousands of Earth Day events and actions worldwide each year.  To catalyze global environmental activism, Earth Day Network has chosen A Billion Acts of Green® as the theme for Earth Day 2011. At over 40 million actions to date, A Billion Acts of Green®–the largest environmental service campaign in the world–inspires and rewards simple individual acts and larger organizational initiatives that further the goal of measurably reducing carbon emissions and supporting sustainability. The goal is to register one billion actions in advance of the global Earth Summit in Rio in 2012.

Time goes? Perhaps no. Time stays, we go. Agreeing with English poet Austin Dobson, I think time makes us old, makes us change, makes us transform but time never change and it only remains as present.

We have come to April, where many bEEautiful tropical flowers blossom everywhere in Melaka and attract many flower lovers. The colorful flowers have made Melaka vibrant and attractive especially the bougainvilleas (also known as paper flower) flaunt their extravagant beauty for all to see.

Ever since my last overseas trip to Thailand last year, I’d been thinking for another trip to one of the South East Asia countries. My dream came true and I was invited to join a trip to Cambodia with some friends in early April. Even though it was a short 3 days 2 nights tour, we enjoyed natural beauty, spectacular view and warm friendly people of Khmer.

On the other hand, we are still keeping track on the news of Japan after the triple tragedy. Since March 11, few aftershocks have continued to rattle the nation and have renewed concerns about the fragile condition of the Fukushima nuclear facility, which continues to leak radiation into the ocean and atmosphere. Let us pray for Japan and what they are going through.

Sharing some shots taken in Melaka last month and early April. Last photo here was taken in Cambodia at the Siem Reap International Airport and I will post more photos of the Cambodia trip shortly.

May all beings bEE happy.
