A friend who lost an arm and a leg –

By Compassion, Wisdom

A story is told about a soldier who was finally coming home after having fought in Vietnam. He called his parents from San Francisco. “Mom and Dad, I’m coming home, but I’ve a favor to ask. I have a friend I’d like to bring home with me.”

“Sure,” they replied, “we’d love to meet him.”

“There’s something you should know.” the son continued, “he was hurt pretty badly in the fighting. He stepped on a land mine and lost an arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to come live with us.”

“I’m sorry to hear that, son. Maybe we can help him find somewhere to live.”

“No, Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us.”

“Son,” said the father, “you don’t know what you’re asking. Someone with such a handicap would be a terrible burden on us. We have our own lives to live, and we can’t let something like this interfere with our lives. I think you should just come home and forget about this guy. He’ll find a way to live on his own.”

At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him.

A few days later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco police. Their son had died after falling from a building, they were told. The police believed it was suicide.

The grief-stricken parents flew to San Francisco and were taken to the city morgue to identify the body of their son.

They recognized him, but to their horror they also discovered something they didn’t know, their son had only one arm and one leg.

Moral of the Story…

The parents in this story are like many of us. We find it easy to love those who are good-looking or fun to have around, but we don’t like people who inconvenience us or make us feel uncomfortable. We would rather stay away from people who aren’t as healthy, beautiful, or smart as we are.

Thankfully, there’s someone who won’t treat us that way. Someone who loves us with an unconditional love that welcomes us into the forever family, regardless of how messed up we are.

Tonight, before you tuck yourself in for the night, say a little prayer that God will give you the strength you need to accept people as they are, not as you think they should be, and to help us all be more understanding of those who are different from us!!!

Take time to think about this…….

Barbie Hsu Sticks Up for Animals

Vegetarians Make Chicks Happy!

Vegetarians Make Chicks Happy!

What do you get when you cross a chick, a pig, and “the Queen of Beauty”? Four fabulous new ads featuring Taiwanese actor Barbie Hsu. The latest celebrity to pose for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Asia-Pacific’s vegetarian campaign, it’s easy to see why Barbie was recently crowned Asia’s Sexiest Vegetarian. And even though she has played opposite a menagerie of hot actors in numerous films and dramas, from Meteor Garden to Corner With Love to the upcoming Summer of Bubbles, Barbie’s PETA co-stars are her cutest yet.

Why does Barbie feel so “connected” to her cuddly co-stars? Unique and fascinating animals, chickens are not that different from humans. Like us, they experience fear and pain.

And from the moment they are born to the time of their death, pigs, chickens and other animals raised for food are subjected to fear, pain and suffering on factory farms. Confined to dark, filthy warehouses, animals are deprived of everything that is natural and important to them. They routinely undergo debeaking, tail-docking, and castration—all without any pain relief. At slaughter, many are scalded or dismembered while they are still alive.

“Animals are like my family, brothers, sisters and friends,” says Barbie. “We’re all equal. I love them all, that’s why I won’t eat them.”

Qian Hongyan lost both her legs in an accident at only three years old in 2000. Hongyan’s family wasn’t wealth enough to provide her with hi-tech equipment to help her walk, so they gave her a basketball to help her move. Hongyan used brushes as low-level crutches. She was able to travel to and from home and school by bouncing on the basketball. Five years later, doctors were finally been able to give her prosthetic legs.

The seventh national special sports-meeting was held in Kunming in May 2007. Qian Hongyan went to watch the games every day and seeing the handicapped players struggle in the matches deeply moved her. After the sports meeting, Qian Hongyan was determined to join in the special swimming club. She and her parents went to consult the opportunity with Zhang Honghu, a well known coach who has trained many handicapped swimming champions. Then, Qian Hongyan began her life in the swimming club and did professional swimming training.

“Qian Hongyan studies hard. She never grouches in training although she was confronted with many difficulties at the beginning, ” her coach said.

When Kaka and Ronaldinho stride out onto the pitch for the World Cup in South Africa this summer, few of their millions of fans are likely to notice that their yellow jerseys are made from old plastic bottles.

But five-time winners Brazil, along with Portugal and the Netherlands, will for the first time be clad in shirts made from recycled polyester in a bid to make the tournament a fraction greener. The shirts, made by Nike, will also be worn at the finals by the teams of the USA, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Serbia, and Slovenia.

Fans supporting their country can buy away kits of the 100% recycled shirts from today, with home versions available from 1 May. They will cost £50, the same price as non-recycled shirts.

It takes up to eight recycled plastic bottles to make each of the shirts, which are sourced from Japanese and Taiwanese landfill and melted down before being processed into fabric. Nike claims the process cuts energy use by 30% compared with newly manufactured polyester.
