Towards the end of last year, I did a product shooting of Japanese food at a Japanese restaurant in Melaka Raya together with Jeff for the new menu he was designing. Jeff, a full time graphic designer gave me many tips in shooting products and it was a great pleasure working with him.

There were more than a hundred dishes we shot during the session and I couldn’t even remember the names. However, the dishes were looking fantastic just like a work of art, thanks to the chef, Shaun, and I tasted some of the dishes after captured the shots, and they were just great!

Good news for all photo lovers in Melaka! From yesterday on, heritage state Melaka hosts world’s largest press photo exhibition, World Press Photo 11 for ten days. This most popular photo event in the world only happens in four locations in Malaysia and Melaka is one in the list.

The official opening day of World Press Photo 11 exhibition in Melaka was yesterday on the ValEEntine’s Day. I was glad to be there on its launching and witnessed the spectacular photos which have stunned thousands of readers in last year’s most shocking news events.

A good photo can tell a thousand words of a story. The photos in the exhibition share important stories including those of survival, global issues and cultural differences, acting as a platform for visitors to gain more knowledge about what is going on in the world. Each of the photos is unique and different yet all stunning.

I would recommend this exhibition to friends especially those who like photography to pay a visit. This is a good opportunity to learn and explore photojournalism which can also help with almost all types of photography. The exhibition really opened my eyes to so many new and different possibilities in photography.

So, to go to the exhibition, it is held at the Balai Seni Lukis Melaka building (next to the post office of Dutch Square Melaka) from the 14th February until the 23rd. Be quick and be there since the exhibition is in the town now, and after that it will move on to its final two locations which are Sabah and Penang.

Bibi Aisha, 18, who was disfigured as retribution for fleeing her husband’s house in Oruzgan province, in the center of Afghanistan. At the age of 12, Aisha and her younger sister had been given to the family of a Taliban fighter under a Pashtun tribal custom for settling disputes. When she reached puberty she was married to him, but she later returned to her parents’ home, complaining of violent treatment by her in-laws. Men arrived there one night demanding that she be handed over to be punished for running away. Aisha was taken to a mountain clearing, where she was held down, and had first her ears sliced off, and then her nose. In local culture, a man who has been shamed by his wife is said to have lost his nose, and such treatment is considered punishment in kind. Aisha was abandoned, but later rescued and taken to a shelter in Kabul run by the aid organization Women for Afghan Women, where she was given treatment and psychological help. After time in the refuge, she was taken to America, where she received counseling and reconstructive surgery.

Clinging on for dear life to the side of a vertical cliff, the tiny lion cub cries out pitifully for help.

His mother arrives at the edge of the precipice with three other lionesses and a male. The females start to clamber down together but turn back daunted by the sheer drop.

Eventually one single factor determines which of them will risk her life to save the youngster – motherly love.

Slowly, agonisingly, the big cat edges her way down towards her terrified son, using her powerful claws to grip the crumbling cliff side.

One slip from her and both animals could end up dead at the bottom of the ravine.

Just as the exhausted cub seems about to fall, his mother circles beneath him and he is snatched up in her jaws.

She then begins the equally perilous journey back to the top. Minutes later, they arrive and she gives the frightened creature a consoling lick on the head.

The dramatic rescue, captured by wildlife photographer Jean-Francois Largot, was played out in Kenya’s Masai Mara game reserve.

Despite the presence of wardens to deter poachers, day-to-day life for the lions is not without its dangers … as the cub learned the hard way.

年轻人的心狂跳不已。董事长将他一把拉到自己旁边坐下，说：“我划船技术太差了，居然让女儿掉进湖里，多亏有你相助。当时我只顾女儿的安危，没来得及向你道谢。”

年轻人竭力抑制自己的情绪，说：“很抱歉，先生，我从未救过您女儿。”“肯定是你！我记得你脸上有块痣。年轻人，你骗不了我的。”董事长仍是一脸感激。

“先生，我想您肯定弄错了。”年轻人惶惑地站起来，“我没有救过您女儿。”

对方凝视着年轻人，忽然，他笑了起来：“好！年轻人，我欣赏你的诚实，明天来上班吧！”

后来年轻人问公司的一位主管：“救董事长女儿的那位年轻人找到了吗？”那位主管大笑起来：“董事长根本没有女儿。”

诚实永远是人生畅行无阻的通行证，习惯是养成的，先从平常的生活中培养诚实的美德，以至于在紧要关头才不会有挣扎。

Hokkien New Year eve (Bai Tian Gong) at Chris's place

Today, the 9th day of Chinese New Year is also the significant day to all Hokkien. It is the Hokkien New Year and yesterday the eve celebration known to the Hokkien as ‘Bai Tian Gong‘ (in Chinese, 拜天宫) was held in many places of Malaysia. Although I am not a Hokkien, I still share the joy and celebrate the festive and last night I was invited to Chris Baba’s place for the celebration.

Copy-and-paste the story behind the festive from the Bai Tian Gong‘s post published two years back:

During a Chinese New year of the Ming Dynasty, there was a bandit raid in the province of Hokkien. These intruders however robbed and burned down villages, attacked and killed the villagers. The people of the villages were in fear and escaped from their burnt villages during the night.

Some of the villagers then hid themselves among the sugarcane fields. Needless to say, those villagers prayed to Heaven God (Tian Gong) for salvation during their hideout. The pursuing intruders spent many days trying to locate and hunt them but to no avail. On the ninth day of that Chinese New Year, they finally gave up and returned to their region.

The Hokkiens then happily emerged from the sugar cane fields, and praising the blessings of the celestial deities and owing gratitude to the sugarcane plants for saving them from destruction. Thus, in all Hokkien celebrations, the sugarcane plant is given prominence.

Realizing that it was also the 9th Day of the Chinese New Year and coincidentally the birthday of Heaven God, they decided to make votive offerings and prayers to the Jade Emperor for their salvation. There are many version of the Hokkiens’ Bai Tian Gong stories. Whichever it is, the hokkiens believe that our life and prosperity are granted by the Heaven God.

On the eve of the 9th day, a pair of sugarcane plants are used by the Hokkiens usually placed one on each side of the offering table or the front door of the house. The pair of the sugarcane symbolises unity, cooperation and strength. The sugarcane itself is a symbol of harmony and a token which can bring good and ‘sweet’ results. The very straightness of the sugarcane stem also ensures that the Hokkiens can become a clan of honest and sincere people.

Chris is from the Baba-Nyonya family, and they always have their unique tradional sets of rites and rituals. Since many of the Baba-Nyonya are Hokkien and worship Ti Gong (天公), the Heaven God, the celebration of Bai Tian Gong to them is a great grant event and loaded with complex ceremonies. It would be difficult to see such a great preparation for celebration nowadays, due to modernization and exposure to western ideas, many of the younger Baba-Nyonya generation prefers to skip some the ceremonies.

Anyway, many of Chris’s relatives and friends gathered at his place for the great celebration. I met Henry my old friend over there. Then I was served with a bowl of delicious Hokkien noodle prepared by Chris’s mom and it was simply awesome! I managed to capture some photos of the little girl of Chris and the settings of Bai Tian Gong.

I didn’t wait for the countdown at Chris’s place but got back home at 11:30 p.m. On the 12:00 midnight, I stood at my house door and observed the Hokkiens ring in the New Year with extravagant firecrackers and fireworks.

Happy Chinese New Year! 新年快乐!

Sharing the shots captured for the past two days in Melaka, places like Dutch Square, Jonker Street, Jalan Hang Kasturi (also known as Tofu Street), Jalan Kampung Pantai and Melaka Raya. During the outing, I also tried to photograph the dragons in town as we are entering the year of dragon in two days time.

Before we release the second part of “Our town Malaqa” video, Fred, Kenn and I made a short film of pre Chinese New Year’s (CNY) atmosphere in Melaka.

While we were filming for the first video about our lovely hometown last month, it came to our mind that to do a Chinese New Year’s video as well, to share the many moments of CNY happiness with our fellow friends and family.

This video features decoration of Chinese New Year in the streets of Melaka town, shopping mood in Dahtaran Pahlawan, lion dance championship in Mahkota Parade, and invited some locals and foreigners to say a few greetings.

And fortunately we managed to capture the 398 feet long of 1Malaysia prosperity Dragon guarding the entrance to Jonker Street. The clips were included into the video right before we finalized it.

We really appreciate all of the great support and help from our friends in making this film. Besides, we would like to thank our friends and family who are always so kind and supportive to us. Without you life would be less colorful and nice.

Right, keeping the spring’s mood going! Sharing some shots of Melaka. While doing filming with Kenn-Wai and Fred these few weeks for our next coming video, I also collected a series of photos which I hope to deliver the atmosphere of Chinese New Year in town.

These shots were taken in a few location including Jalan Hang Kasturi, Jonker Street, Bemban and Jasin.

Meng-Hong donating blood on the first day of new year 2012 at Jonker Street

St. John Ambulance Malaysia is a Malaysian-based, non-profit statutory body dedicated to the works of humanity and charity for the relief of persons in sickness, distress, suffering or danger without any distinction of race, class, colour or creed.

Last Sunday which was also the first day of new year, a blood donation drive held by St. John’s Ambulance Malaysia of Melaka state and co-organized by Sin Chew Daily press took place in the Jonker Street Melaka.

When Meng-Hong and I went during the evening, many people from the public were registering and queuing to donate their blood, proving itself again as the community always ready to help others. The next day I read on paper, the donation drive was a great success with 95 blood units donated successfully.

Patients suffering from life threatening diseases and conditions need blood to save their lives, and this constant need can only be met through voluntary blood donations.

Thanks to the generous efforts of the volunteers and donors. I took some shots of the donation drive during our visit.

Here’s our first video ever about our hometown Malaqa (Melaka). This is the first part of the video, which highlights some of the morning and afternoon’s daily life in the town.

It was shot in Dec 2011, at few locations such as Harmony Street, Melaka Raya, Bukit Cina, Little India, Melaka River, Stadhuys, St Paul Hill, Jonker Street, Hereen Street and Pulau Melaka.

congratulation to Celestle Chai and Dennis Lee!

Had a great time with Celestle and Dennis on their big day.

Celestle and Dennis married on the most perfect day last month, 20.11.2011 in Muar, Johor and it was a pleasure to documented their wedding. We started from Dennis parents’ place in Muar while Celestle got ready at her parents’ home in Bahau, Negeri Sembilan. Then we drove north in the early morning to Celestle’s place and endured a few door games before the groom could get to his bride.

The beautiful day was perfected with a joyful reception held in Muar with the piano performance of Dennis’ sister, Rebecca and friends. Although it was drizzling in the evening, it didn’t turn down anyone’s mood.

Their day was warm and just lovely !It was happy to see a couple surrounded by such loving and supportive family and friends.

Congratulation to Celestle and Dennis for tying the knot and thanks for having me to capture the important milestone in your life.

hand of a resident of the centre

Boy-boy has grown up, got out from his baby crib and walking like a normal child…

It had been a year since I visited Boy-boy. Time seems to pass quickly. Last time I could remember, he was in his baby crib.

After our trip to Pertubuhan Kebajikan Villa Harapan Melaka, we continued our visit to the Handicapped and Mentally Disabled Children Centre Melaka in Bukit Baru with the children from Merlimau.

Amy the care keeper was there doing some introductory and explaining the daily operation to the children before she brought us around. I could still see familiar faces. The thing that really surprised me was Boy-boy, he was like a healthy and normal child (he had a heart surgery), following us around the centre.

My parents were glad to see the children were mixing happily as they were part of the big family there. After taking some shots, my parents had to leave the centre for our next appointment, leaving the children with the teachers.

Just before we left the centre, a group of students from MMU came to visit the centre. And Amy again, brief to them patiently. It’s glad that the centre is getting more attention from the public as it needed to be, public support is the source of funding to keep the centre’s operation.

Pre-Christmas atmosphere in Kuala Lumpur

Christmas atmosphere is almost everywhere in KL’s busy shopping malls now. After the street photography in Pudu with friends, we walked to the shopping area to have our lunch and certainly to feel in the spirit of Christmas.

We made to Time Square first as Fred had an appointment with a customer. Then through Low Yat Plaza and Sungei Wang we went to the Lot 10’s food court. It’s named Hutong Lot 10 food court, is offering variety of non-halal food that took us quite some time to decide what to have. I heard that each of these eateries is specially hand-picked by the CEO of Lot 10, Tan Sri Francis Yeoh. After a yummy meal, we visited Fahrenheit 88, Starhill Gallery and finally arrived at Pavillion.

At this time of the year, most malls in KL are dressed up in beautiful Christmas decoration and create special and magical Christmas experiences for the shoppers. Christmas trees, rein deers, Santa Claus and Santarina, angels, EElves, vibrant and colorful lightings, special Christmas’s delicacy and anything to do with Christmas are seen everywhere. We had recharged our energy after lunch and started to get some shots of the lovely environment.

It had been a decade since I strolled in KL city like this. I always think KL as a busy, stressful and hectic city. This visit however gave me a different perception. It was crowded and busy as usual, yet calm, relaxing and filled with laughter and joy. Perhaps it was simply that the festival atmosphere had taken over. The crowd just having fun, spending sweet time with family or loved ones, and hang out with friends.

So we too had so much fun and glad that we made it to this trip, not to mention meeting up with Robin and Chun-Chow. Thanks to Fred and Kenn-Wai for inviting me, and we are looking forward for a next time in near future.

Last Saturday, I had the pleasure to meet up with Robin Wong and Chun-Chow in Kuala Lumpur together with Fred and Kenn-Wai. It was drizzling early morning when we left Kelana Jaya where we stayed at the place of Kenn-Wai’s sister. However and it turned out to be clear and sunny sky when we arrived at Pudu LRT station. The weather was really unpredictable in KL.

Even though I always took bus from Pudu bus station back to Melaka when I studied in KL, I didn’t know the place well. Robin does so he became our guide that morning. He first brought us to have a delicious Hakka noodle breakfast. As soon as we were done, so called shutter therapy session by Robin had begun.

Robin got us in the alleys, to the dry and wet markets. We were amazed by how lively the area was, and it was full of locals and foreign workers. Though we hardly see tourist over there. Most of the people there were nice even though some might not seem to be. I guess that’s the reason why Robin loved the place so much for street photography. We just discovered the other face of KL. We got to learn from Robin how he approached the crowd and captured the people so close.

Robin and Chun-Chow are experienced street photographer and familiar with the place. They knew exactly when and where to press the shutter. It was just their instinct. Fred, Kenn-Wai and I also tried to get some nice shots of the street but we rather enjoyed our walk with jokes until we reached the wet market at about 11:00 am. We couldn’t stand the strong smell of the market place under the hot sun so we threaded our way through the market quickly.

The photography session was smooth and everyone had fun. we decided to go Bukit Bintang area to take some shots of the Christmas decoration and atmosphere. While making our way to Time Square, we stopped by Pudu Plaza to have a break and share our captures with each other. Everybody gained valuable experience and intuitive knowledge in street photography from others.
