Last Sunday, when I met Meng-Hong, he told me about a tragedy happened in a family whom he and his parents know for long. The news was published in the Sin Chew Daily last week. Then Meng-Hong did the favor of explaining the family’s situation and gave me a copy of the paper with the news. The previous post in Chinese published here was the news about the tragedy and I did a simple summary:

Two months ago, a 37 year old mother, Wang Yue-Fang collapsed during feeding her 5 month-old baby. She then felt in to a coma and the family was worry about her. Since then the scene of the happy family bacame to sorrow.

Before the tragedy happened, Wang was a responsible and hardworking housewife who took good care of her three children and household. She was in good health without any serious illness and the family lived a happy life until the sudden tragedy happened which turned everything the other way round.

Wang was admitted to the hospital immediately for emergency treatment after she had collapsed and was nearly died during the treatment. However she survived and remained unconscious in intensive care unit for 5-6 days and eventually lying in coma.

two months ago, Wang Yue-Fang collapsed and lying in coma; husband, Xue Shun-An doing mucus suction for Wang everyday (photo from Sin Chew Daily)

According to the doctor, Fang suffered from cerebral anoxia, and the condition wasn’t optimistic as the chance of recovery was low. The bill for the treatment before Fang discharged from the hospital hit RM130,000. This turned to be a big problem for Xue who worked as chicken rice seller in a night market. He could not afford to pay the full sum so the only thing he could do was to borrow money from relatives and friends in order to pay the bill.

Now the Wang’s familystaying in Taman Muzaffar Shah is facing a hard time. Dealing with family crisis is one of the hardest things, yet her  husband Xue Shun-An (38 year-old) never gave in to the cruel fate. He continued to seek for help and take care of the ill wife and three children.

On the other hand, Xue has to take care of the wife everyday, doing mucus suction at least 10 times a day, and tube-feeding of liquid food for Wang who couldn’t devour any food. The medicine and medical equipment for daily usage are costly. Taking care of Wang however, affects Xue’s working hours and making the living of their family even tougher.

Although the welfare officer, Wang Shi-Niang visited the family and assisted them to apply for monthly welfare support of RM300, it’s still insufficient and more aids are needed. The MCA Bukit Katil Division Chairman, Yang Huan-Yuan said that they had opened a joint name account of three names to receive donation and funding from public, and one of the names is Wang’s husbang, Xue Shun-An. The MCA Melaka State Legal Bureau Chairman, Wang Miao-Xia said MCA will continue monitor the account to ensure its transparency and proper use for Wang’s medical and living expenses.

Donation of public can be made to the joint name account for helping Wang:

Bank: Public Bank
Account name: Seet Soon Ann
Account number: 3164127807

Any enquire about the donation, feel free to contact the following person as stated in the Sin Chew Daily newspaper:

1.) MCA Bukit Katil Division Chairman, Yang Huan-Yuan (012-6821511)
2.) MCA Bandar Baru Ayer Keroh Branch Chairman, Wang Chun-Cheng (019-6563878)
3.) MCA Crisis Relief Squad Bukit Katil Division Chairman, Lai Zhi-Qiang (012-6362239)

For people who know me and wish to help Wang, you are welcome to pass the money to me and I will be sending the money to them latest by next Sunday (12/12/2010).

I apologise for any mistake in the translation. Thank you for your attention and kindness. May all beings be happy.

Bill Gates, left, and Warren Buffett, seen in this 2007 photo during the annual Berkshire Hathaway shareholders meeting in Omaha, are trying to persuade other American billionaires to give at least half their wealth to charity.

Gates, Buffett lead campaign to persuade America’s wealthiest to donate their fortunes

A little over a year after Bill Gates and Warren Buffett began hatching a plan over dinner to persuade America’s wealthiest people to give most of their fortunes to charity, more than three-dozen individuals and families have agreed to take part, campaign organizers announced Wednesday.

In addition to Buffett and Gates — America’s two wealthiest individuals, with a combined net worth of $90 billion, according to Forbes — 38 other billionaires have signed The Giving Pledge. They include New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, entertainment executive Barry Diller, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, energy tycoon T. Boone Pickens, media mogul Ted Turner, David Rockefeller, film director George Lucas and investor Ronald Perelman.

“We’re off to a terrific start,” Buffett, co-founder and chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, said in a conference call also attended by Bloomberg and San Francisco hedge-fund manager Tom Steyer and his wife Kat Taylor, founder of OneCalifornia Bank.

Buffett said he and Gates, the Microsoft co-founder, and Gates’ wife Melinda made calls to fellow billionaires on the Forbes 400 list of wealthiest Americans — in many cases, people they had never met — to try to persuade them to join the giving pledge.

The Giving Pledge

The Giving Pledge

“We contacted between 70 and 80 people to get the 40. A few were unavailable. We don’t give up on them. Every saint has a past, every sinner has a future. We’ll keep on working,” Buffett said.

Bloomberg, who made the bulk of his estimated $17.5 billion fortune from financial news and information services company Bloomberg L.P., said it didn’t make sense to leave everything to his children and have them go through life as members of “the lucky sperm club.”

“You don’t want to leave them so much money that it ruins their lives,” Bloomberg said. “You want kids who can look back and say, ‘Yeah my family helped me but I did something on my own.'”

Added Steyer: “We need to support each other. I look at this as replanting your garden so that future generations will have a full bounty of crops.”

The United States has roughly 400 billionaires — about 40 percent of the world’s total — with a combined net worth of $1.2 trillion, according to Forbes. If they all took the pledge, that would amount to at least $600 billion for charity.

The 40 names that have pledged to date have a combined net worth surpassing $230 billion, according to Forbes. Several of them have said they plan to give away much more than 50 percent of their wealth. Buffett has promised to donate more than 99 percent of his wealth.

The pledge is a moral commitment to give, not a legal contract. It does not involve pooling money or supporting one cause or organization. It’s up to each person who signs the pledge how to divvy up their wealth.

In letters on the givingpledge.org website, the 40 billionaires explain what motivated them to follow in the footsteps of Gates and Buffett.

“I’m particularly thankful for my father’s advice to set goals so high that they can’t possibly be achieved during a lifetime and to give help where help is needed most,” CNN founder Ted Turner said. “That inspiration keeps me energized and eager to keep working hard every day on giving back and making the world a better place for generations to come.”

“My pledge is to the process; as long as I have the resources at my disposal, I will seek to raise the bar for future generations of students of all ages,” filmmaker George Lucas said. “I am dedicating the majority of my wealth to improving education.”

Gates and Buffett hatched the idea of a giving campaign in mid-2009 at a secret dinner meeting in New York with a few select billionaires. The campaign went public this June.

Buffett acknowledged that some wealthy people may find it beneficial to donate more so they can avoid or write off more taxes. But he said that’s not the reason billionaires are taking the pledge.

“Of the 20 or so people that I have talked to that have signed, not one of them has talked to me about taxes,” Buffett said.

“It may be a consideration but I think the motivation goes far, far beyond taxes.”

And of the billionaires contacted who didn’t join the pledge?

“There were a few people who gave answers that indicated their various dissatisfaction with government,” Buffett said. “A few had dynastic ideas about wealth … an intergenerational compact with family to keep that going. And there were others who said, ‘I’ve got a plane to catch and I’ll have to hang up.'”

Decided to go to the centre again this Sunday, we are collecting goods from friends such as clothing and books for the children. On top of that, we hope to get some new friends and their family members to come along and make it even more significant.

Secret millionaire Grace Groner (photo from http://www.bittenandbound.com)

Grace Groner was orphaned when she was 12 and lived simply until passing away at age 100 in January. Grace left the world a better place, at least her little corner of it.

Groner, a secret millionaire, left her entire estate worth $7-million-dollars to her alma mater, Lake Forest College in Illinois.

In 1935, Groner purchased $180 stock in Abbott Laboratories – where she worked as a secretary for 43 years –  and, thanks to her frugal lifestyle and thoughtful investing, Grace amassed a $7-million-dollar fortune in the last 75 years.

Grace lived in Lake Forest in a modest one bedroom cottage with plain furnishings, mismatched dishes and a decades-old television set. She bought her clothes at rummage sales and walked instead of driving.

Grace had already donated $180,000 to a scholarship program at the liberal arts school.

“Oh my God,” was the reaction of Lake Forest College president Stephen Schutt upon learning the amount of Groner’s generous donation. Schutt reportedly knew that Grace intended to leave money to the college however, until her death, he had no idea how large the gift would be.

Grace’s money will help Lake Forest’s 1,300 students take internships and study abroad – experiences that many of them would never have had without her help.

Her little home was also donated to the college and will be used to house recipients of scholarships from the foundation. The house has been named “Grace’s Cottage,” in honor of a woman filled with grace.

'Large inheritances can kill heirs.' -Vladimir Potanin (Photo from http://dc-epaper.com)

Hyderabad, Feb. 3: Following the footseps of Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, Russian billionaire Vladimir Potanin plans to donate his entire fortune after his death, the Russian agency RIA Novosti quoted Mr Potanin from an interview with The Financial Times.

The Russian Tycoon says, “Large inheritances can kill heirs,” adding “a million [dollars] handed over

from inheritance helps a person to receive a good education, find employment without haste and find himself. A transferred billion [dollars] kills him and deprives him of the sense of life”.

He made his fortune during the loans-for-shares auctions in the mid-1990s when Russia’s cash-strapped government sold the country’s biggest industrial assets for a song, Mr Potanin he had not made up his mind yet on specific charitable projects. He has a daughter and two sons.

His step comes after repeated requests by the Russian President, Mr Dmitry Medvedev, and the Prime Minister, Mr Vladimir Putin, urging businessmen to spend money on charitable projects.

“My children are growing up, their father is a billionaire and a well-known guy. They, for one, are in my shadow, and secondly what motivation in life do they have to achieve something?” he said.

“In this sense, I consider it a very correct step to hand over one’s fortune for the service of society and not for inheritance. I am going to follow the example of (Bill) Gates and (Warren) Buffet.”
