Happy Chinese New Year! 新年快乐!

Sharing the shots captured for the past two days in Melaka, places like Dutch Square, Jonker Street, Jalan Hang Kasturi (also known as Tofu Street), Jalan Kampung Pantai and Melaka Raya. During the outing, I also tried to photograph the dragons in town as we are entering the year of dragon in two days time.

Before we release the second part of “Our town Malaqa” video, Fred, Kenn and I made a short film of pre Chinese New Year’s (CNY) atmosphere in Melaka.

While we were filming for the first video about our lovely hometown last month, it came to our mind that to do a Chinese New Year’s video as well, to share the many moments of CNY happiness with our fellow friends and family.

This video features decoration of Chinese New Year in the streets of Melaka town, shopping mood in Dahtaran Pahlawan, lion dance championship in Mahkota Parade, and invited some locals and foreigners to say a few greetings.

And fortunately we managed to capture the 398 feet long of 1Malaysia prosperity Dragon guarding the entrance to Jonker Street. The clips were included into the video right before we finalized it.

We really appreciate all of the great support and help from our friends in making this film. Besides, we would like to thank our friends and family who are always so kind and supportive to us. Without you life would be less colorful and nice.

Right, keeping the spring’s mood going! Sharing some shots of Melaka. While doing filming with Kenn-Wai and Fred these few weeks for our next coming video, I also collected a series of photos which I hope to deliver the atmosphere of Chinese New Year in town.

These shots were taken in a few location including Jalan Hang Kasturi, Jonker Street, Bemban and Jasin.

Meng-Hong donating blood on the first day of new year 2012 at Jonker Street

St. John Ambulance Malaysia is a Malaysian-based, non-profit statutory body dedicated to the works of humanity and charity for the relief of persons in sickness, distress, suffering or danger without any distinction of race, class, colour or creed.

Last Sunday which was also the first day of new year, a blood donation drive held by St. John’s Ambulance Malaysia of Melaka state and co-organized by Sin Chew Daily press took place in the Jonker Street Melaka.

When Meng-Hong and I went during the evening, many people from the public were registering and queuing to donate their blood, proving itself again as the community always ready to help others. The next day I read on paper, the donation drive was a great success with 95 blood units donated successfully.

Patients suffering from life threatening diseases and conditions need blood to save their lives, and this constant need can only be met through voluntary blood donations.

Thanks to the generous efforts of the volunteers and donors. I took some shots of the donation drive during our visit.

Here’s our first video ever about our hometown Malaqa (Melaka). This is the first part of the video, which highlights some of the morning and afternoon’s daily life in the town.

It was shot in Dec 2011, at few locations such as Harmony Street, Melaka Raya, Bukit Cina, Little India, Melaka River, Stadhuys, St Paul Hill, Jonker Street, Hereen Street and Pulau Melaka.

Jonker Walk night market, one of the must-go tourist attraction during the night of Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Melaka. During these nights, the street will be close for motor vehicles from 6:00 pm to midnight and traders will set up their stalls along the street and sell products associated with or reflect the cultural colors such as antique, arts and crafts, souvenirs, local and ethnic traditional food, and much more.

After getting my new gear last month, I’d decided to test the camera at Jonker Street and aimed to capture the life and essence of the street. That Sunday night I was set to Jonker Street alone after having a wonderful dinner with family nearby. On that drizzling Sunday, it was less crowded than usual.

I spent one hour on the street walking and shooting from one end to the other, enjoying a slow walk, assimilating myself into the crowd and behaving like a tourist. It was fun though, everything was like a new discovery. Having visited the street so many times, I still think that the street is full of surprises each time I go.

鸡场街的倒影

上个星期难得有空，便和Dylan到闻名的鸡场街（也叫文化街）街拍。我们已经在鸡场街街拍摄了几次，而这次又到鸡场街是给自己的挑战。一直寻找着完美，几乎忘了那不完美的存在、那不一样的感觉。

常常欣赏网上和朋友们的鸡场街照片，觉得都是很复古，很优美的马六甲老街。我和朋友们一起也拍摄过的几条街，豆腐街、打铁街、青云亭街、马车街、海山街等等，也一样追求完美的照片：大热天的蓝天白云、复古混合殖民式的建筑物、还有那满街好奇的游客。

这次和Dylan出来街拍，我们希望能随性而不追求这完美的照片。不必在乎角度、曝光，只要感觉对了就按下快门。

拿了妹妹的Panasonic傻瓜相机，我们便出发了！轻轻松松的走向那鸡场街,寻找不起眼的事物、不一样的感觉：

moody evening of Jonker Street

Looking back of old photos sometimes gives us some clue of our development in photography. And early this week, I flashed back the old albums in juesatta and realised that the style of my photography has changed throughout the years. Something I’ve gained and that something is also missing.

I wanted to looking for something that missing…

Two days ago Dylan and I decided to do street photography again. Besides favoring the nostalgic street, we chose Jonker Street again where we did street photography a few times, so that we could know how far we could go when shooting at the same location.

That afternoon when we arrived, I told Dylan, “Let’s forget about what we’ve learnt of photography: composition, exposure, and quality. Put those lesson 101 aside and shoot only what we feel like shooting.”

And Dylan said to me, “Right! Rules are made to be broken.”

Like a wise person once said: if you intend to break a rule you should always learn it first to make sure you’re breaking of it is all the more effective! Then we’d decided to give a go.

Without relying on the decent performance DSLR camera I have, I grabbed my sister’s Panasonic compact camera and we were off searching for the ‘feel’ of street.

Parellel to the famous Jonker Street, there is a street which has three coexisting places of worship: Kampung Kling Mosque, Cheng Hoon Teng Chinese Temple, and Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Hindu Temple. It is Jalan Tokong (tokong means temple in Malay) and also known as the “Street of Harmony” by the locals, showing the harmony amongst the people in Malaysia.

While having a free time this Monday, Kenn-Wai and I decided to do a casual street shooting in the old town of Melaka. We just wanted to shoot for leisure and snap whatever we like on that day, even though we shoot photos always for actual events. We met in Jonker Street and setup our gear before Kenn-Wai suggested to go to Jalan Tokong.

It was drizzling in the afternoon when we started our journey in Jalan Tokong. Most of the shops were about to close then street was getting quiet and occupied with only a few tourists and locals. We spent first half of the session at the junction of Jalan Tokong and Jalan Hang Lekiu waiting for the right subject such as senior citizens and tourists to pass this intersection.

From the junction we could see the three of the places of worship. This was one of the reasons we chose to go Jalan Tokong. Not to mention that the three places of worship, Kampung Kling Mosque, Cheng Hoon Teng Chinese Temple, and Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Hindu Temple are one of the oldest temples and mosque in our country, they are also built along the same street and near to one another.

The area is now predominantly occupied by Chinese though, the presence of the mosque and the Indian temple suggests that this area was once lived by a multi ethnic community that was able to live harmoniously together. Besides, Jalan Tokong is made more thrilling by the Chinese traditional trades. We discovered some Chinese effigy makers and shops that sell red and gold lanterns, paper money and Chinese funerary necessities along the street.

We continued along the street and  took a few shots outside the Kampung Kling Mosque, went into the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple to pay respect and photo-taking, and finally went to the Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple which were close for visiting during that time. After an hour of relaxing photo-taking, Kenn Wai had an appointment and had called off the shooting session.

The outing was splendid and allowed both Kenn-Wai and I to realise how far we could go comparing our currents shots with the photos from the last few street shooting in that area. Again, Kenn-Wai taught me a lot of things humbly and benefited me even more.

The 11th of August was Awal Ramadan, the beginning of Islamic month of fasting. Within these 29 or 30 days per lunar sighting of Ramadan month, participating Muslims all over the world refrain from eating and drinking from dawn until sunset. It is intended to teach Muslims about patience, humility, and spirituality. Thus the significant first day of Ramadan is declared public holiday for the states of Johor, Kedah and Melaka.

On this first day of Ramadan last week, everyone in Melaka was having a day off and so to the students, Timothy, Iu-Lung, and Denny, whom I met from photonian. They then organised a street shooting around Jonker Street and were inviting others to join. Since I was having lunch at Jason’s house, which near to that area, I called up Timothy to join them and was hoping to learn from them. Timothy, Iu-Lung and Denny are no Malaccan but from Bintulu, Tampin and Kuala Lumpur relatively. They are current students of the Multimedia University in Melaka, and they are really passionate in photography.

The three of them display great skills yet diverse in their style from each other. Tim, who is active in the university’s photography event always likes to try new thing and produce outstanding masterpieces. On the other hand, I came to know Iu-Lung after seeing his name and photos in the paper and magazine, receiving good feedback from others. It also gave me a good impression on his black and white photos. Denny whom I just knew, showed a dynamic of passion in photography during the outing.

After we met and gathered at Jalan Tukang Besi, we began our shooting along the street, targeting craft-men whom hardly be seen nowadays. We were looking particularly for an elderly doing rattan at Jalan Kampung Kuli. His workplace was next to the Makam Hang Jebat (Hang Jebat’s grave). It is shame to say that I did know the grave’s existence prior to the outing till I was told and brought there by the three students from other states. And unfortunately we didn’t manage to see the rattan man as he was already off business on the day. Feeling disappointed, we continued  on our search of a craft-man.

We then headed to Jalan Kampung Pantai. I remember there is an elderly craft-man who repairs sewing machine at his shop right opposite the fabric shop I went a week ago. And yes, the craft-man was there on business that day and he was fixing a sewing machine when we reached. We were happy to meet our objective – taking photos of a craft-man. With the old craft-man’s consent, we snap some of his photos before we moved to my last stop, Lorong Jambatan.

The street leads directly to the famous bridge which known by the locals as Gui Men Guan in Chinese, meaning hell gate. It’s believed that many had been killed during the world war Japanese invasion or suicide here by jumping into Melaka River. As it is dead end, no car would drive into this street.

When we arrived there, a family of few members was spending some precious time together and the kids were cycling back and forth along the street. They were friendly and happily greeted us on our arrival. The kids were not camera-shy but to continue cycling. It came to my mind immediately to shoot panning photos of the kids on bikes instead of taking racing cars. So I turned down the my camera’s shutter speed and started to do panning shots of the family’s cycling moments. We enjoyed there capturing the shots of the people, building and the bridge.

It was late then I had to leave for my next appointment. Timothy and friends continued their journey to other streets and I believed they’d got really amazing shots of the old town of Melaka. I really enjoyed the walk around and snap outing. It was also a great pleasure to join these energetic and passionate young men especially having the same interest in keeping the aspects of history before they disappear altogether.

I received a surprise phone call weeks ago from an old friend, Yih-Shyang from Ipoh. Being my ex-college mate and also my long lost friend, Yih-Shyang got my contact number from my friend, then called me and wished I could be his guide in Melaka.

Since the day we knew each other in college, he always wanted to visit Melaka and promised to come. Nine years of hearing that, finally he came alone from Kuala Lumpur all the way down to Melaka town to meet me and to spend the rest of the day touring around Melaka. I just got to know he is into photography.

It was Monday, the next day after the 50mm shooting with photonians, I was a little bit too sick to do another shooting in Jonker Street again, rather I became a photographer’s photograper, which I took the photos of Yih-Shyang’s most of the time, and helped him to snap his photos with his Nikon D90.

We spent the whole day around Melaka town and enjoyed the local cuisine such as Chaozhou porridge, Chendol, Nyonya zongzi, Nyonya dinner, and others. It was a feeding frenzy with a guy with big appetite like Yih-Shyang. Too, we went to some famous tourist spots  such as Cheng Hoon Teng temple, Clock Tower and The Stadhuys of the Dutch Square Area, Melaka River, and Eye of Malaysia to do our shooting.

That evening before we went for a dinner of delicious Nyonya cuisine, I brought Yih-Shyang to the Eye of Malaysia and did some shooting of Melaka’s amazing sunset. Unfortunately, there was where the battery of my camera went flat before the sun touched the horizon. We however continued to shoot with Yih-Shyang’s camera of the sunset and night views of Melaka. There I learned something of a Nikon’s camera.

After the night shooting, we waved goodbye to each other and Yih-Shyang headed back to Kuala Lumpur. It was a wonderful day to catch up with an old friend, and toured around Melaka which made me feel like a tourist myself in my hometown. Thanks to Yih-Shyang for contacting me and inviting me.

"Hi there. May I take your order please?"

It had been a while since I had an outing with photonian. Two weeks ago on a Sunday, Max invited me to join a street photography outing at the Jonker Street of Melaka. There were 15 of us taking part in this event and each was required to shoot with only 50mm lens which was a challenge to shoot with a fixed range lens.

We started at 4pm, a hot afternoon and spent about 3 hours at Jonker Street and the other streets near to it, such as Tukang Besi Street, Heeren Street, Tokong Street and others. It was amazing and interesting to see how fellow friends could use a variety of different angles of a subject and created unique and creative pictures. Everyone could be a teacher for me.

This photography outing was a great fun experience seeing that we had spent a precious time together and could share our photography experience with each other. Some of the shots I took of the photonians:

Before the event-shooting for the blood donation in Bukit Beruang last Sunday, Cinda invited Wee-Peng and I for a photography outing at the Jonker Street of Melaka in the morning. She needed a photo of “window” topic for the KL photonian‘s presentation thus asked for our company.

We started early in the morning to avoid the hot weather. Walking along Tokong Street, we were looking for inspiration which could bring back the nostalgic old days, especially with the windows of Cheng Hoon Teng Temple and Xiang Lin Temple. At the same, we were also looking for gaps, holes, cracks, and frames which she could use as a form substitution for windows. After the temples at Tokong Street, we moved to Jonker Street and continued our search of the heritage buildings.

It would be my first photography outing with Cinda. Thanks to Cinda as I really enjoyed the shooting session and also my morning walk in the heritage town of Melaka with Cinda and Wee-Peng’s company. May everyone be happy.

Ah-Kun in his house

Two days ago, Dylan and I went to Ah-Kun’s house at the Jonker Street of Melaka. It is a part of the old Chinatown of Melaka and the street is close to traffic for night market during the evenings of every weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). Hawkers on pushcarts will gather on these days to sell all kinds of delicious street food and local merchandise. A permanent stage was there at the end of the street for performances such as dancing and singing during weekend. As to date, however, the old stage has been demolished and a new design of stage is under construction.  

Back to the shooting at Ah-Kun’s house. The interior architecture of the house is not so much different from the typical Baba and Nyonya houses which I’ve visited before. It really amazed me when Ah-Kun showed me the wood-fire stove which his family is still using, a balcony garden which planted with orchids and other flowers, and some Japanese souvenirs which his aunt brought back from Japan decades ago. Being at Ah-Kun’s house, it made us felt like being in the 50s-60s of Melaka.  

We managed to shoot the rooftops of the houses in Jonker Street which was the purpose of our shooting. After that, we went for a second half of the shooting with the company of Ah-Kun. We headed towards Kampung Ketek nearby Cheng Hoon Teng Chinese temple. We took a few shots over there of the Malay houses. After we went for a rojak noodle and cendol at an Indian stall, we called it a day.

During this outing, I learned so much about Melaka from Ah-Kun and photography from Dylan. Thanks to Ah-Kun for allowing us to do a shooting at his place and thanks to Dylan for his company.

Little Tang (Tang Yao-Kun) with his Chinese calligraphy writing, "dragon leaps, tiger jumps". Behind is the teacher Mr. Liu Ming-Liang.

Many are amazed by the calligraphy writing of our little friend Tang (Tang Yao-Kun). One day during the calligraphy class, I chatted with Yao-Kun’s father.

3 years ago, when Yao-Kun was in kindergarten, he was a naughty and hyperactive kid. His teacher always suggested to his parents of bringing Yao-Kun to Mr. Liu Ming-Liang’s class to learn Chinese calligraphy. She added calligraphy is an art, a Chinese tradition, and also would be able to let little Tang settle down and more concentrate in his study. However, father Tang and mother Tang did not know much about calligraphy and thought that it would not be as useful to little Tang as told.

The kindergarten teacher insisted. Everytime father Tang and mother Tang went to the kindergarten, the teacher suggested the same thing again and again. Due to that, the parents reluctantly agreed and brought little Tang to Mr. Liu’s calligraphy class. They were however unsuccessfully locating the place of the class, and so they gave up.

The next time they met the teacher, again she suggested the parents to bring little Tang to the calligraphy class. Father Tang and mother tang felt sorry to give any excuse since the teacher really took this matter seriously and it would be for the own good of little Tang.

Where there is a will, there is a way: father Tang and mother Tang found Mr. Liu’s calligraphy class eventually and little Tang started his class since then. In addition, little Tang did not know about Chinese calligraphy at all. He took part in half-heartly. Mother Tang was in charge of bringing little Tang to class everyday.

Months after, and little Tang stepped into primary school year one. Father Tang was asking the performance of little Tang in the calligraphy class. He was told that little Tang was an excellent and well-behaved student in class. This appraisal of Mr. Liu however was a mistake because he was mistaken of little Tang’s name with another student. According to Mr. Liu, little Tang did not perform and not well-behaved in class. Even worse criticism was given by the teacher.

Father Liu was pissed when he was told and could not agree with Mr. Liu. He decided to take over the responsibility of little Tang’s learning from his mother, putting full supervision of little Tang’s learning and started to stay during the whole period of little Tang’s calligraphy class to check on him.

Not long after that, there was a competition. Father Tang encouraged his son to take part in order to gain experience and boost the interest of his son. This would be the first competition little Tang took part; also he was nervous as he had to write in front of a bunch of people and with other children. He finished the writing though.

During the prize giving ceremony for primary school students category, prizes were announced from the consolation prizes to 2nd runner up, 1st runner up then the best prize. Prizes announced respectively, the confidence of little Liu was getting lower and lower, and disappointment was getting greater. The prize giving ceremony for primary school competitors was over, and little Liu did not win any prize. He was so disappointed.

Little Tang  insisted to stay for the later prize giving for junior high school category and high school category as he thought he might stand a chance in winning. Father Tang did not know how to explain to his son but he accompanied his son until the whole event was over. Both of the father and son were so upset. The son was let down because he didn’t win; the father was upset because the son.

During their ride back to home, both father and son didn’t speak a word. There was a moment of silence. Looking at the son, father Tang felt bad of forcing little Tang to the calligraphy class again. So he asked, “What do you want to do now?”

“Dad, I have to work harder!” he answered.

3 to 4 years later after the first lesson of calligraphy, little Tang is 11 year-old this year. He is the star of Pay Fong 2 Primary school and many students and teachers are proud of little Tang. He has won many prizes in calligraphy competitions. The reasons behind the success are the patience of little Tang’s parents, the teaching of Mr. Liu, and also the hard work of little Tang.

Mr. Liu once told me, “Interest can be developed. Talent is nothing more important than hardwork, it only helps to acquire the skill quicker than others. The main keys of improvement are dedication and determination.” English physicist also said, “If I am anything, which I highly doubt, I have made myself so by hard work.”
