They are in Melaka: Canon EOS 5DS R camera and EF 11-24mm f/4L USM lens.

Last Friday I and good friends, Kenn Wai and CW Tay were invited by Ms. Vna from Canon Malaysia to do a test and review on Canon latest flagship DSLR camera, EOS 5DS R and new ultra-wide angle lens, EF 11-24mm f/4L USM.

We met up at a new cafe, Hideout Coffee just across the road from our studio. We had the review over coffee with Vna. She had this session arranged for the three of us with yummy latte.

This new full-frame Canon camera features 50.6MP CMOS Sensor with dual DIGIC 6 image processors. I will skip the specification part which is available over Google.

I did a few shots of the cafe, testing the grip, focus, quality of the output, shooting in full Raw which is about 50MB of size per image, and tested the new EF 11-24mm f/4L USM lens. It feels like Canon 5D Mark III.

The uncle at Hideout Coffee was kind. Knowing that we are wedding photographers and doing some test shoot, he helped us to switch on the all the lights of the cafe, and asked us if we required anything to shoot inside. In addition, the barista serves nice coffee.

This ultra-wide angle lens is truly amazing.

Capturing at 11mm however shots were less distorted, out of my anticipation of a ultra-wide angle lens. It was ‘Wow’ to all of us how wide it could cover at 11mm. Despite shooting at f/4 widest aperture with low shutter speed, we needed nothing to worry about minor hand-shake. The advantage of its super wide focal length at 11mm could compensate the minor effect of handshake.

Much lesser distortion even at widest 11mm focal length (shot with Canon EOS 5DS R and Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM, no lens correction in post-processing)

Much lesser distortion compared to other ultra-wide angle lenses, even at its widest 11mm focal length (shot with Canon EOS 5DS R and Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM, no lens correction in post-processing)

Being one of the widest lenses available now with much lesser distortion and provides super-sharp images, the Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM lens is a magnificent lens for landscape and architecture photography. Added to my wish list 🙂

Since the test was done with ambient and objects in the cafe, I then requested Vna to be my model so that I could test the quality of skin tone it captures, comparing to 5D mark II which I am using. Reluctantly yet kind Vna agreed.

With Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens mounted to 5DS R, I captured Vna with mainly windows light and ambient of the cafe. Then switched to 5D Mark II with Sigma’s 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM, captured Vna again with her precious 5DS R.

Comparing the shots taken with these two system, even with different lens, both cameras captured skin tone with obvious differences. 5DS R delivered a more contrast and color rich tone, compared to 5D Mark II which gave a more pinky and soft skin tone.

With its gigantic megapixels resolution and superb sharpness performance I read online, I requested to do some test at our studio. Vna again agreed to be our model.

CW Tay had a shooting session going and couldn’t join us. Before he left we captured a big family photo (image on the top of post). At 11mm ultra wide focal length, we could probably capture the whole cafe-full crowd.

So we headed to our studio, Craftify Studio.

Four strobes were setup to photograph Vna who visited our studio for the first time. Kenn Wai helped with the lights while I briefed Vna on the pose. Using Canon 5DS R camera with Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, we did two postures: half-body and full-body, making the half-body one a formal shot and full-body a fun shot. Vna later described the latter as shopaholic pose. Sniff. Sniff.

The new Canon EOS 5DS R camera is a great camera for studio photography, especially the sharpness surprised us. Ultra-large megapixels however requires extra work and time for the post processing, as minor retouch will make a big difference visually.

It is a pricey camera however, for photographers who specialize in studio shooting and commercial photography, 5DS R is a good camera to have in arsenal with its large megapixels and sharpness performance. We have yet tested the 5DS R to its full capability and new features. We hope to have more time to review again in near future.

Big thanks to Vna and Canon Malaysia giving us this opportunity to try out this stunning full-frame camera.

May all bEE happy 🙂

Congratulation to Cindy and Chee-Seong!

The proposal, Chee Seong + Cindy

The proposal, Chee Seong + Cindy

After nine years, Chee-Seong decided to take a big step forward in life with Cindy.

I know Chee Seong for years and he is always a caring and daring person. His first idea would be to propose in public, to give something unforgettable for Cindy. After hearing the good news from him, I was so happy and congratulated him. So I talked to Kenn-Wai and decided to give our support to Chee-Seong. The whole thing was but to keep it secret from Cindy.

After planning the surprise proposal, we invited their friends and family to gather at the concierge of Dataran Pahlawan Shopping Mall Melaka on last Saturday. And Cindy was otherwise didn’t know anything about this, but was only invited shop there with the sisters.

So the whole thing followed by Chee-Seong making a sudden appear on the stage with roses and singing a song of theirs when she was shopping at the concierge, just like what happened in the video. He gave her a really wonderful surprise, touched the heart of the bride-to-be and filled her eyes with tears.

And the answer was YES!

Congratulation to the lovely couple, Cindy and Chee-Seong. May the lovEE you share always continue to shine. As you look forward to all you’re dreaming of, may you be blessed with love and happiness forever!

Enjoy the video (watch HD version on Vimeo, or alternatively on YouTube) here as much as we do.

Have a lovely evening and may all beings bEE happy.

A lovely evening with little boy Wen-Ze and little girl Wen-Er

Spending a day with little boy Wen-Ze and little girl Wen-Er can be so much fun yet challenging. They were cute and active and both siblings kept winding each other.

We went to a hill in Tampin with both Wen-Ze and Wen-Er, and mom Tracy, letting them playing and running joyfully on the grass and capture joyful and spontaneous shots of them while having fun, more of a documentary than a portrait.

Thanks to Kenn-Wai and Iu-Lung for assisting and we had a great evening with the family. Kind of missing them now and looking forward for another photography session with them again.

Sharing some photos captured. Have a nice day and may all beings bEE happy.

Finally having some free time to upload some photos and start blogging again.

Remember the M Nicole Make Up at Haha Studio July 2012? This was the session after the studio shooting and supposed to be a two-month back topic.

Anyway, we continued an outdoor shooting at Klebang Beach, Melaka after the studio shooting.

The models got changed to colorful outfits and beautifully done make-up then headed to the beach in Klebang.

This was also another opportunity for us to meet other photo enthusiasts, future make-up artists and models. We learned from each other and had a great time together.

Thanks to M Nicole Make Up organizing such a good outing and we are looking forward for the upcoming ones.

Have a nice day and may all beings bEE happy. Sharing some shots taken on the event:

actual wedding day photography in Melaka

Congratulations to Siew-Chen and Melvin

Another brilliant day with Siew-Chen and Melvin in early June this year. We, Kenn-Wai, Fred, Brendon and I had the pleasure to photograph and video-shoot their big day.

On the lovely morning, we found ourselves with a pretty bride and her attractive bridesmaids wearing beautiful Cheong Sam. And the guys weren’t bad either; groom was smart looking in black Zhong Shan Zhuang while the brothers were wearing Chinese Tang Suit.

Both Siew-Chen and Melvin play band and sometimes perform in public. This explained why they and their friends were so sporting and happening on that day especially during the door games to pick up the bride.  The guys had to finish up the girls’ secret recipe bitter gourd juice, specially made extra spicy sausages, and lastly the ladies’ favorite, cicada pudding. These so-called food would definitely get into the Top 10 Most Gross and Disgusting Food in weddings.

The wedding kiss happened after Melvin read up and signed a marriage contract, a loving yet unequal treaties I would say. Then he and the brothers sang the song “If I Have A Million Dollar”, kind a funny song to please the bride before he was allowed to enter the room and kissed the bride.

Soon after the tea ceremony at Melvin’s place, they went to their new house and Siew-Chen changed from her white wedding gown to a red traditional Kwa, a heavily embroidered formal Chinese wedding gown. Then she had an ornate headdress on and looked gorgeous.

The fun carried on into the night. The reception was held at LTP Restaurant Melaka. Siew-Chen’s mom spiced up the night by giving a few songs on the stage and drew large applause from the guests. And now we know where Siew-Chen’s beautiful voice comes from.

Thanks to Siew-Chen and Melvin for having us on your special day. Congratulation and may the singing of enjoyment be along with you, may the life in the following year filled with joyance and happiness, and may you have a wonderful new life togEEther!

May all beings bEE happy. Sharing some shots taken on the day and hope you enjoy.

It had been a while since I stepped into studio for shooting. Yesterday was the exam for the students of M Nicole Make Up and I was invited to join the event at Haha Studio (in Kota Laksamana, Melaka). It was rather a gathering with the photography friends where getting everyone together.

I didn’t do any studio shooting while I was there, however I took some behind the scene shots, chit chat with friends, and watched how professional the photographers, make up artists and models performed their work.

After the studio shooting, we went for an outdoor shooting which I had the chance to really get into action with the friends.

Thanks for inviting and it was a really great session. May all beings bEE happy. Sharing some of the photos.

Abbott Malaysia - corporate social responsibility

MALACCA: Some staff from Abbott Malaysia had taken time off to paint the walls at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Convent Infant Jesus(1) Melaka, here.

The group of 45 staff also spent time with underprivileged children and fixed the grills at the Fatima Home, a home run by the retired Catholic priest.

They also provided contributions at another home — the Happiness Centre, a centre for the disabled at Taman Anggerik, Malacca.

Muru Annamalai, general manager of Abbott said that this is part of their corporate social responsibility.

“We want to touch people’s life and spend time together with the children and painting the walls together with them is one of the means.

“It’s gratifying to see smiles at the children’s faces when conducting games and activities at the Fatima Home and also at Happiness Centre,” Annamalai added.

SK CIJ(1) headmistress Katherine Tan said children need not be involved academically, but they could also partake in other activities like the painting the walls, painting the pathways with special wordings and others.

“Today is our co-curriculum day and we take this opportunity to get the children involved, 20 students and 10 teachers joined the Abbott staff in this activity,” she said.

2012 Wesak Day procession in Melaka

Wesak is the thrice blessed day to commemorate the birth, enlightenment (nirvana) and death (parinirvana) of the Buddha. On every Wesak Day in Melaka float parade is held; and a larger scale one is held on every decade of the celebration.

This year 2012, Wesak Day was celebrated on last Saturday, 5th of May and it also marked the 50th year Wesak procession in Melaka, one of the grand celebration. Procession which is normally held on the eve on Wesak Day however was carried out on Wesak’s night this year.

Thousands of devotees thronged Melaka town and some from outstation just came by and joined the celebration. More than sixty Buddhist Temples and organisations took part this year’s procession which covered 7.7 km, from the former site of Eye on Malaysia passing through Jalan Merdeka and Bukit Cina, to Kubu Stadium in Jalan Kubu.

Kenn-Wai, Fred Yap and I didn’t miss such a grand celebration. We gathered at the main entrance of Dataran Pahlawan shopping mall which was also the judging stop and enjoyed the colouful and brightly lit floats, performance by dragon and lion dance troupes, rhythm from several school bands, Chinese and Sri Lankan dances.

There were tens of photographers gathered there to capture their best shots in order to take part in the Wesak photography competition. So we had to get a little room to see and photograph the procession.

The last float was from Seck Kia Eenh Buddhist Temple as usual. And it passed through the judging stop just before midnight and it was only half the journey to Kubu Stadium. We wondered what time the procession concluded. It would be very late we guessed.

We enjoyed ourselves on that night. Although the Wesak procession is held here in Melaka every year, we would have to wait for another ten years to see such a grand one again.

Thanks to all the organizers, volunteers, community members, students and supporters for the hard work in helping to make this procession such a success.

Sharing some shots taken. May all beings bEE happy.

I am however not going to do a full review on 1D X (which is available all over the internet) but to share some of my experience on playing with it and also the images of new Canon Speedlite flash 600EX-RT and the new Canon Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT.

My first impression: I really likEE the new ergonomic design of 1D X. The hand-grip is more comfortable which is quite similar to that of the new 5D Mark III, better than my 5D Mark II. Canon also takes a different approach on the 1D X’s button placement, allowing me to have quick access and navigation on menu and settings.

This new flagship of Canon EOS camera has a larger 3.2″ and improved 1,040k dots LCD screen. It will be a great advantage for us for on-site image evaluation. And checking of the ISO range on the camera setting, it can be expanded up to 204,800. I didn’t do any test on ISO performance because I was in a bright environment but hopefully I can do it next time.

I did a few of shots with the 1D X and the focusing really impressed me. Fast and accurate! 1D X has an entirely new autofocus capability with a massive 61 autofocus points, providing high autofocus accuracy and precision, low-light autofocus performance. Thanks to a DIGIC processor dedicated strictly to helping the autofocus.

Besides autofocus, 1D X can shoot at 12 fps (14 fps with mirror lock-up). It is a revolutionary improvement for a full-frame camera; remember that the larger sensor, larger and heavier mirror to move. Yet 1D X can produce a full frame quality at high speed. Check on video clip below on the continuous shooting of 1D X recorded. It was shooting like a machine gun. So wildlife and sport photographers are just going love it.

Next a real shooting, I took two shots with the 1D X camera, one of Kenn Wai with the new Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT and one of the buildings and beautiful sky. These were standard shots without playing much with the settings, therefore I wouldn’t comment much on the image quality.

Reading on the specification, 1D X is packed with top-end features which meet the needs of professional photographers. It should be released very soon as to be ready in time for the London 2012 Olmypic game.

Thanks again to Canon Malaysia for the arrangement. Sharing some shots of the 1D X.

May all beings bEE happy.

Congratulation to Grace Lee and Hian-Kim!

We’ve just finished Grace and Hian-Kim’s photographs from their fabulous wedding at Melaka in early March.  On the fourth day of March, Kenn-Wai, Fred, Steve and I were invited to document the wedding for our friend, Bear Lee’s sister, Grace and her charming man Hian-Kim.

We started to photograph early morning at Grace’s place. Grace just looked gorgeous with the great work of Nini the markup artist.

The evening reception was held at Hotel Equatorial Melaka. Stunning environment, joyful guests and wonderful bands just made the dinner very special.

Both Grace and Hian-Kian are very sweet couple. We were honoured to capture their big day. Thanks and congratulation to the both of them.

May all beings be happy.

Xuan-Er

During Chinese New Year, Kenn-Wai and I went for an outdoor portrait shooting of Xuan-Er, a friend of Kenn to resume our photography job for this new year. It had been a year since I photographed model so I had to thank Kenn for making the arrangement.

The weather on that day was very good, bright and sunny, which was very suitable for outdoor. So we went a paddy field away from town with Xuan-Er and began the session.

Xuan-Er had a simple and milky white wedding gown on and she looked gorgeous. Although she wasn’t feeling good, she did a fabulous job and gave us her very best in the shooting. We really appreciated everything.

The shooting went well and we stopped after sunset. Thanks to Kenn and Xuan-Er for the great time together we had.

Sharing some of the shots. May all beings be happy.

Before we release the second part of “Our town Malaqa” video, Fred, Kenn and I made a short film of pre Chinese New Year’s (CNY) atmosphere in Melaka.

While we were filming for the first video about our lovely hometown last month, it came to our mind that to do a Chinese New Year’s video as well, to share the many moments of CNY happiness with our fellow friends and family.

This video features decoration of Chinese New Year in the streets of Melaka town, shopping mood in Dahtaran Pahlawan, lion dance championship in Mahkota Parade, and invited some locals and foreigners to say a few greetings.

And fortunately we managed to capture the 398 feet long of 1Malaysia prosperity Dragon guarding the entrance to Jonker Street. The clips were included into the video right before we finalized it.

We really appreciate all of the great support and help from our friends in making this film. Besides, we would like to thank our friends and family who are always so kind and supportive to us. Without you life would be less colorful and nice.

Happy Chinese New Year! Gong Xi Fa Cai!

May all beings bEE happy.

Congratulation to our town Melaka, being among the 45 ‘must-visit’ places in year 2012, as listed by The New York Times!

“With its lantern-lighted canals and silent, narrow streets lined with decades-old ornate temples and shop houses, few places in Southeast Asia conjure romantic images of the past as effectively as Malacca, Malaysia’s oldest city. A former Portuguese, Dutch and British colony, this Unesco World Heritage site is now attracting record numbers of tourists lured by its unusual architecture and cuisine, which reflect centuries of foreign influences.

More than seven million visitors are expected in 2011, so the town, about 90 miles southeast of the capital, Kuala Lumpur, is welcoming new hotels like the Casa del Rio, a Portuguese-inspired luxury boutique property with 66 rooms; and Courtyard@Heeren, a 100-year-old shop house converted into a 14-room hotel. When you’re not exploring places like the 17th-century former Dutch town hall or Jonker Street’s antiques shops, gorge on Malacca’s outstanding local specialties, like creamy, piquant nyonya laksa at the family-run Donald & Lily’s.”

by NAOMI LINDT

It’s a good news for all our dear friends. And we have to help to keep our town the clean, safe, friendly and happening place we all know and love.

Right, keeping the spring’s mood going! Sharing some shots of Melaka. While doing filming with Kenn-Wai and Fred these few weeks for our next coming video, I also collected a series of photos which I hope to deliver the atmosphere of Chinese New Year in town.

These shots were taken in a few location including Jalan Hang Kasturi, Jonker Street, Bemban and Jasin.

Happy Chinese New Year to all and may all beings be happy.
