Japanese appetiser

Towards the end of last year, I did a product shooting of Japanese food at a Japanese restaurant in Melaka Raya together with Jeff for the new menu he was designing. Jeff, a full time graphic designer gave me many tips in shooting products and it was a great pleasure working with him.

There were more than a hundred dishes we shot during the session and I couldn’t even remember the names. However, the dishes were looking fantastic just like a work of art, thanks to the chef, Shaun, and I tasted some of the dishes after captured the shots, and they were just great!

Here’s our first video ever about our hometown Malaqa (Melaka). This is the first part of the video, which highlights some of the morning and afternoon’s daily life in the town.

It was shot in Dec 2011, at few locations such as Harmony Street, Melaka Raya, Bukit Cina, Little India, Melaka River, Stadhuys, St Paul Hill, Jonker Street, Hereen Street and Pulau Melaka.

the abandoned living space of the house of Jeff's aunt in Heeren Street

After our job assignment in Melaka Raya last Saturday, my friend, Jeff and i went to visit his aunt’s place in Heeren Street, the old street in the heart of the old city of Melaka. The house is one of the historic buildings and is also the place where Jeff was born at. The settings of the house definitely brought back the nostalgic atmosphere just like my grandma’s house in Bunga Raya.

Jeff’s mom, uncle and auntie were at the house when we arrived. They first introduced the place to me and brought me to tour from the front to the back of the house. Like most of the heritage buildings in this area, front half of the lower floor was used for business, while the rest and upper floor were living spaces. The back part of this house is very much abandoned, such as the old stoves, well drinking and toilet; these however leaving us a trace of the early and mid 20th century.

I would like to thank Jeff for bringing me to the his aunt’ place. I had my camera with me so i took some photos during our visit.

A funfair can be a very special childhood memory for the most of us. Early this month, Stephen suggested to us (Henry, Wee-Peng, Koh-Yiaw, and I) to go to the funfair in town to bring back this wonderful memory. After having our suppe, we went to the funfair although it was already 2:30 am in the morning.

It was a small scale funfair located in Melaka Raya, occupied only the size of a football field. The place was nicely decorated, fully lighted with flickering and colorful lamps, and filled with beautiful and cute cartoon graffiti. At the time we went, there were not many visitors, and most were youngsters.

Stephen and Henry were the most excited ones. Both of them visited the side stalls and played games like wheel of fortune, bingo, toss the ring and catch little duckling, hoping to win toys for their nieces and nephews. They didn’t disappoint the children and won many prizes including a big doll. In fact, a funfair wouldn’t be fun without these interesting prizes.

There were also rides like bumper cars, ferries wheel, pirate ship, spinning aeroplanes, and other stimulating rides. It was fun to observe others to play and how they screamed like crazy. Old folks like us didn’t go for any ride, probably losing our bravery as we turn older.

It was really enjoying for us. I was doing photography for a wedding dinner before we went to the funfair, therefore I had my camera with me to capture photos of the place, the folks and the fun we had. Thanks to Stephen for inviting us. May all beings be happy.

Food photography for Ke Man Lou restaurant at Melaka Raya

Last weekend I was invited to snap photos for the menu of Ke Man Lou restaurant （客满楼）and also to have lunch with the Celine and staff there.

The Chinese restaurant, Ke Man Lou is located on the main road of Melaka Raya, opposite to the OSK stockbroking firm and next to the Guardian pharmacy of Melaka Raya.

There were 18 dishes nicely prepared and garnished by the chef, Zhi Ming (translation). Some of those are in the menu whereas some of the new dishes would be added to the menu.

After the shooting, it was a feeding frenzy. This meal was also considered the Chinese New Year reunion lunch for all of us at Ke Man Lou that day. In fact, the number of dishes we had were far more than what I normally had for Chinese New Year meals.

Every dish was really delicious especially the Fried butter prawns ball, Chinese steamed fish fillet with vegetable (my translation), stir fried fish fillet with Mongolian sauce, mammy fried prawn, and fried yam roll with pork rib to be my favorite dishes. Due to allergy to crab, I didn’t have any of those.
