Uncle Lim, the second generation of Long Fatt Teochew Porridge (隆发潮州粥) family business, on the last day of its business

First hands-on Canon EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR camera and last day of Long Fatt Teochew Porridge (隆发潮州粥).

Many old industries are losing their ground against the tides of time, including the family-owned Long Fatt Teochew Porridge, being one of the few authentic Teochew Porridge restaurants in Melaka. Due to old age and tiredness, the family decided to cease the business.I could remember, my grandma used to bring me to Long Fatt when I was little boy. As soon as we stepped in, we could hear songbirds’ chirping from the bird cages hanging over the porridge shop.

Grandma and I would normally have Asam fish, boiled salted vegetable, braised eggs, crispy fried anchovies, and much more variety of traditional Teochew dishes to choose from and served with porridge. It was a yummy experience.

Today marks the last day of Long Fatt’s business operation. Having the latest Canon EOS 5D Mark IV (loan unit from Canon Malaysia for review) which holds on the powerful legacy of the 5D line, my friends and I decided to visit and have our lunch at Long Fatt on its last day and at the same time capture some memories of this traditional food for the generations to come.

We went to Long Fatt yesterday actually just before 2:00pm and everything was sold out. Elderly Uncle Lim, the second generation of this family business, and probably on his 80s who stood behind the food counter told us politely to come again on today.

And so this morning, we anticipated the restaurant to be flooded with supporters and dishes would probably sold out too quickly. We went to the shop when it just opened for business on 11:00am today. The crowd was already there, full house!

Uncle Lim was far more busier today than usual, we chose a table next to uncle so that I could setup the camera on a GorillaPod flexible tripod and connected it with my iPhone via Wi-Fi. 5D mark IV indeed comes with Wi-Fi connectivity and can be remotely controlled with our smart phone to snap photos.

Instead of standing in front of Uncle Lim during his busy hour, I could sit on and waited for the right moment and clicked on the smart phone screen to capture the shots of desire, without disrupting uncle.

Alternatively, we could capture the shots by click on the screen. For the first time, Canon brings a touchscreen to the 5D series. On the live view mode, we could focus and capture with a single touch. I personally always love this feature ever since I had a chance to try out the Olympus OMD cameras which have similar functionality.

Now I could compose my shots with the correct exposure using the live view mode, then click-and-snap instantly to capture some details of the food and shop.

We were glad to be able to make it here, and had one good meal on this last day of September. With a camera in hand most importantly, some shots were captured and cementing the memory forever.

Thank you again for serving many of us including our grandparents, such delicious Teochew’s porridge for almost eight decades, since 1930s. Farewell Long Fatt, one of our favorite Teochew Porridge. It was about much more than food, but a rich taste of nostalgia and memories.

Below are images shot today at Long Fatt Teochew Porridge and other places on yesterday, in RAW format with Canon EOS 5D Mark IV with Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM lens, went through basic RAW post-processing with Lightroom. Let the photos tell its image quality. One thing noticeable, 5D Mark IV shows significant improvement in dynamic range to the 5D line.

PS : We would also like to thank Miss Chia from Canon Malaysia for loaning the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV unit and EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM lens. Can we have this unit? 😀

Kombi on the street of Melaka town

While assisting my friend Kenn for a product shooting yesterday in the busy town of Melaka, I couldn’t resist capturing the beauty of the street of my own hometown even though I had only my iPad.

Kenn was shooting from morning with our clients Lily and Eunice. We started at the area close to the stage of Jonker Street, then headed to Jonker Street World Heritage Park, the place which has a huge copper-made statue of formal body builder from Melaka, Datuk Wira Gan Boon Leong. There are also a couple of statues of dragon, buffalo, and elephant. Kenn joked that these creatures represents Gan Boon Leong’s pets at his house.

We got a couple of product shots over here, and moved on to Voyage Travellers Lounge. We a break, enjoyed the cozy atmosphere of the cafe and had some refreshing fruit juice.

Kenn then continued his shooting around Lorong Hang Jebat. While taking care of our gears at the cafe for Kenn, I too walked around there and snap some street shots with iPad. I always love this part of the the town which covers Jalan Tukang Besi and Jalan Tukang Emas which we can find many nice guesthouses, cafes and pubs such as Voyage Travellers Lounge and Shantaram Bar, and souvenir shops like the unique Orangutan House. The streets never fail to surprise me for everytime I visit.

Since I came back from Vietnam in early August, I didn’t have time to do street photography. Hopefully after these few months of busy and peak weddings period, I can equip myself with DSLR and return to the street and capture my beautiful town and friendly people on the street.

Please do not forget to help the super Typhoon Haiyan’s victims in Philippines by supporting with some donation to UNICEF, Red Crescent, or Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation. Details of donation to UNICEF can be found on my previous post. Please pray for the victims in Philippines and may the departed souls rest in peace.

Hope you like the shots of Melaka town taken with my iPad and have a good weekend. May all beings bEE happy.

At 8:30 p.m. today, people around the world will celebrate Earth Hour by turning off their lights for one hour in a symbolic show of support for the planet. Earth Hour brings awareness to climate change and symbolizes a commitment and concern for managing climate change. Started nine years ago, the movement now spans thousands of cities in countries around the globe.

Earth Hour raises awareness and provides a unique opportunity for collective action aimed at doing something positive for the environment. It is not just about saving energy for that one hour, but it symbolizes a concern for managing climate change and commitment to adopting environment-friendly practices and habits in everyday life.

So let us participate in the Earth Hour, not only to conserve energy but to raise awareness on the need to protect the environment.

Sharing some of the shots taken in year 2012. May all beings bEE happy.

Before we release the second part of “Our town Malaqa” video, Fred, Kenn and I made a short film of pre Chinese New Year’s (CNY) atmosphere in Melaka.

While we were filming for the first video about our lovely hometown last month, it came to our mind that to do a Chinese New Year’s video as well, to share the many moments of CNY happiness with our fellow friends and family.

This video features decoration of Chinese New Year in the streets of Melaka town, shopping mood in Dahtaran Pahlawan, lion dance championship in Mahkota Parade, and invited some locals and foreigners to say a few greetings.

And fortunately we managed to capture the 398 feet long of 1Malaysia prosperity Dragon guarding the entrance to Jonker Street. The clips were included into the video right before we finalized it.

We really appreciate all of the great support and help from our friends in making this film. Besides, we would like to thank our friends and family who are always so kind and supportive to us. Without you life would be less colorful and nice.

Happy Chinese New Year! Gong Xi Fa Cai!

May all beings bEE happy.

Congratulation to our town Melaka, being among the 45 ‘must-visit’ places in year 2012, as listed by The New York Times!

“With its lantern-lighted canals and silent, narrow streets lined with decades-old ornate temples and shop houses, few places in Southeast Asia conjure romantic images of the past as effectively as Malacca, Malaysia’s oldest city. A former Portuguese, Dutch and British colony, this Unesco World Heritage site is now attracting record numbers of tourists lured by its unusual architecture and cuisine, which reflect centuries of foreign influences.

More than seven million visitors are expected in 2011, so the town, about 90 miles southeast of the capital, Kuala Lumpur, is welcoming new hotels like the Casa del Rio, a Portuguese-inspired luxury boutique property with 66 rooms; and Courtyard@Heeren, a 100-year-old shop house converted into a 14-room hotel. When you’re not exploring places like the 17th-century former Dutch town hall or Jonker Street’s antiques shops, gorge on Malacca’s outstanding local specialties, like creamy, piquant nyonya laksa at the family-run Donald & Lily’s.”

by NAOMI LINDT

It’s a good news for all our dear friends. And we have to help to keep our town the clean, safe, friendly and happening place we all know and love.

Right, keeping the spring’s mood going! Sharing some shots of Melaka. While doing filming with Kenn-Wai and Fred these few weeks for our next coming video, I also collected a series of photos which I hope to deliver the atmosphere of Chinese New Year in town.

These shots were taken in a few location including Jalan Hang Kasturi, Jonker Street, Bemban and Jasin.

Happy Chinese New Year to all and may all beings be happy.

my loving mom was wrapping the fillings to zongzi

Zongzi is traditionally eaten during the Duanwu Festival, falling on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. It has a long history dating back thousands of years. During Duan Wu Festival which has been held annually for more than 2000 years, many traditional customs and activities are practiced on the specified day by the Chinese people. Among these customs are dragon boat racing and eating zongzi.

Many legends circulate around the festival including eating zongzi, but the most common explanation given derives from the tale of Qu Yuan, a poet and also a patriot from the Zhou dynasty (1045 BC – 256 BC). During the seven warring states period of Zhou dynasty before Qin Dynastay, Qu Yuan was a minister in the State of Chu and did much to assist the ruler in governing the state. He was however banished from the kingdom by his ruler for treason as he opposed an alliance between the Chu and their rival state of Qin. During the days of his exile, Qu Yuan wrote many famous poems until he ended his life in great despair and distress by drowning in the river upon learning that the State of Chu had been defeated by Qin.

On hearing of Qu Yuan’s death, the local villagers who were extremely fond of Qu Yuan, were in great distress. Fishermen searched for his body by sailing their boats down the river, furiosly beating the drums onboard and other people threw zongzi into the river to keep away fish and evil spirits from destroying Qu Yuan’s body. Later, many people imitated these acts to show their respect for this great patriotic poet and this practice continues today and eating of zongzi is no exception.

Zongzi is made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves, then are cooked by steaming or boiling. There is no set fillings as it varies from province to province, though the most commonly used for this steamed delicacy are egg, beans, dates, sweet potato, walnuts, mushrooms, pork, or a combination of all of the above. Wrapping up the zongzi is sometimes a closely guarded family secret.

basic components of Nyonya zongzi: white glutinous rice, blue glutinous rice, and seasoned pork

basic components of Nyonya zongzi: white glutinous rice, blue glutinous rice, and seasoned pork

In Melaka where Baba and Nyonya were orginated from, there is an unique type of zongzi called Nyonya zongzi. This Nyonya version features the intricate flavor depths of typical Nyonya cuisine with a hint of sweet, salty and spicy. Its recipe is also vary from Nyonya’s family to family. Despite the recipe of Nyonya zongzi is closely guarded by family, the most significant character of Melaka’s Nyonya zongzi is the blue colored glutinous rice stuffed inside.

Days before the coming Duan Wu Festival, my mom wrapped up Nyonya zongzi according to my granny’s recipe, due to popular requests from relatives and friends. Among the ingredients used were glutinous rice, seasoned pork, sugared white gourd, chestnut, natural blue coloring from flowers and others. Making of zongzi is not complicated but very time-consuming in preparing the ingredients, including soaking the rice overnight, mincing the pork and season to taste, finely chop sugared white gourd and chestnut, and last but not least, wrapping up all the ingredients with bamboo leaves. It took my mom’s two days with the help of my dad and sisters to prepare about a hundred of zongzi.

final product: delicious Nyonya zongzi

Most of the zongzi made by my mom were given to friends and relatives and I was lucky to have some. Special thanks to my mom, dad and sisters for the hard work and I really loved this yummy Chinese delicacy. Wishing everyone a happy Duanwu Festival.

"Hi there. May I take your order please?"

It had been a while since I had an outing with photonian. Two weeks ago on a Sunday, Max invited me to join a street photography outing at the Jonker Street of Melaka. There were 15 of us taking part in this event and each was required to shoot with only 50mm lens which was a challenge to shoot with a fixed range lens.

We started at 4pm, a hot afternoon and spent about 3 hours at Jonker Street and the other streets near to it, such as Tukang Besi Street, Heeren Street, Tokong Street and others. It was amazing and interesting to see how fellow friends could use a variety of different angles of a subject and created unique and creative pictures. Everyone could be a teacher for me.

This photography outing was a great fun experience seeing that we had spent a precious time together and could share our photography experience with each other. Some of the shots I took of the photonians:

It’s the eve of Chinese New Year 2010. Most Chinese should have had their reunion dinner with family by now and settling down for the count down of the first day of Chinese New Year. It’s a warm and cheerful night now.

May those we loved who just left us rest in peace and always be remembered. May we all be grateful of what we are having now and appreciate the people who are with us.

Happy happy chinese new year and Gong Hei Fat Choi. Before I signing off to count down, prepare to make blessing and pay respect to my ancestors like most Chinese would do, let me share some photos of the night view of Melaka town with everyone:

I hadn’t tasted frozen yogurt before, until my friend, Danny invited me to shoot his frozen yogurt for his dessert shop which is opening next week, 23rd of January on the 2nd floor of  Dataran Pahlawan, Melaka (next to the old entrance of Carrefour).

When shooting the products, I had the chance too to taste the frozen yogurt with all the toppings available such as lemon, mango, peach, pineapple, kiwi fruit, hazelnut, peanuts, raisins, chocolate and many more.  Danny will be using high quality yogurt mix from overseas.

Though I am a yogurt love, I never tasted frozen yogurt before. When I had the first sip of the frozen yogurt given by Danny, I was immediately addicted to it. That very night, I had 5 cups of the frozen yogurts. It tasted sweet, a little bit of sour, chilling, and of course refreshing and yummy yogurt taste. It also went well with different topping combinations.

I would strongly recommend it to my friends and will definately be there during the opening of Danny’s shop, Skinny Yogurt to snap some photos and yum, try again the frozen yogurts. Below are some samples of my shoots for Danny:
