Donate blood, give love, save life

Good day.

Just found a website which has the schedule for blood donation in Melaka. The site is created by Perkhidmatan Darah Melaka (Melaka Blood Bank) and it has the schedule for upcoming blood donation campaigns’ details of date, time and venue which is very convenient for the public to check instead of asking around or checking the papers.

Click on the link above and check out the closest date for blood donation campaign in Melaka. Donate blood, give love and save life.

Here are some benefits of donating blood:

  • It feels great to donate!
  • You get free Milo drink.
  • It’s something you can spare – most people have blood to spare… yet, there is still not enough to go around.
  • You will help ensure blood is on the shelf when needed – most people don’t think they’ll ever need blood, but many do.
  • You will be someone’s hero – in fact, you could help save more than one life with just one donation.

St. John Ambulance Malaysia is a Malaysian-based, non-profit statutory body dedicated to the works of humanity and charity for the relief of persons in sickness, distress, suffering or danger without any distinction of race, class, colour or creed.

Last Sunday which was also the first day of new year, a blood donation drive held by St. John’s Ambulance Malaysia of Melaka state and co-organized by Sin Chew Daily press took place in the Jonker Street Melaka.

When Meng-Hong and I went during the evening, many people from the public were registering and queuing to donate their blood, proving itself again as the community always ready to help others. The next day I read on paper, the donation drive was a great success with 95 blood units donated successfully.

Patients suffering from life threatening diseases and conditions need blood to save their lives, and this constant need can only be met through voluntary blood donations.

Thanks to the generous efforts of the volunteers and donors. I took some shots of the donation drive during our visit.

May all beings be happy.

Organizing by Malaysian Red Crescent of MMU Melaka with collaboration of Hospital Melaka, IT Society MMU, Usrah Society MMU and Arabic Language Society MMU on the 28th June 2011 from 9.00am to 5.00pm at MMU Main Hall.

It is also opened to outsiders to feel free and contribute and join our mission.

The opening ceromony will be conducted at 12.00 noon by our guest of honour, Y.A.B Datuk Seri Haji Mohd Ali Rustam(Chief Minister of Malacca state).

World Blood Donor Day takes place on 14 June each year but we are organizing it on 28 June 2011. The aim is to raise global awareness. World Blood Donor Day is also an opportunity to celebrate those who already donate blood, in response to the worldwide increase in demand for voluntary non-remunerated blood and plasma donations.

Giving blood makes it possible for many people to lead normal healthy lives. Every year thousands of patients require blood transfusions in our hospitals, because they are undergoing surgery, recovering from cancer or have been in a serious accident. More than 1 million new people are diagnosed with cancer each year. Many of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment.

Date:- 28th June 2011

Time:- 9.00 am- 5.00pm

Venue:- Multimedia University, Melaka

Blood donation at Mahkota Parade, 22rd and 23th January 2011

"You are my hero, dad"

"You are my hero, dad"

We don’t need a special reason to give blood. We know that a family member or a friend might need blood some day and it’s the right thing we do. Donating blood is simple and is a safe process:

A tiny drop of blood is taken from your fingertip. This allows the staff of hospital to check your haemoglobin levels and ensure that giving blood won’t make you anaemic. If all is well, you will be able to donate blood. You will donate about 350ml or 450ml of blood – this amount of blood is quickly replaced by your body. Once you have given blood, you should have a short rest before being given some refreshments usually a drink and biscuits. All in all giving blood shouldn’t take more than an hour.

There was a blood donation event held in Mahkota Parade of Melaka last Saturday and Sunday. The event was organized by University of Malaya, Fifth Residential College of UM, Lions Club and Mahkota Parade. While we had some free time to shop for Chinese New Year goods in Mahkota Parade during the weekend, Wee-Peng and I dropped by the venue and I took some shots over there. Sharing some shots here:

Mr Harrison, dubbed 'the man with the golden arm', is still donating every few weeks at the age of 74. He is thought to have saved 2.2million babies

An Australian man who has been donating his extremely rare kind of blood for 56 years has saved the lives of more than two million babies.

James Harrison, 74, has an antibody in his plasma that stops babies dying from Rhesus disease, a form of severe anaemia.

He has enabled countless mothers to give birth to healthy babies, including his own daughter, Tracey, who had a healthy son thanks to her father’s blood.

Mr Harrison has been giving blood every few weeks since he was 18 years old and has now racked up a total of 984 donations.

When he started donating, his blood was deemed so special his life was insured for one million Australian dollars.

He was also nicknamed the ‘man with the golden arm’ or the ‘man in two million’.

His blood has since led to the development of a vaccine called Anti-D.

He said: ‘I’ve never thought about stopping. Never.’ He made a pledge to be a donor aged 14 after undergoing major chest surgery in which he needed 13 litres of blood.

‘I was in hospital for three months,’ he said. ‘The blood I received saved my life so I made a pledge to give blood when I was 18.’
