We don’t need a special reason to give blood. We know that a family member or a friend might need blood some day and it’s the right thing we do. Donating blood is simple and is a safe process:

A tiny drop of blood is taken from your fingertip. This allows the staff of hospital to check your haemoglobin levels and ensure that giving blood won’t make you anaemic. If all is well, you will be able to donate blood. You will donate about 350ml or 450ml of blood – this amount of blood is quickly replaced by your body. Once you have given blood, you should have a short rest before being given some refreshments usually a drink and biscuits. All in all giving blood shouldn’t take more than an hour.

There was a blood donation event held in Mahkota Parade of Melaka last Saturday and Sunday. The event was organized by University of Malaya, Fifth Residential College of UM, Lions Club and Mahkota Parade. While we had some free time to shop for Chinese New Year goods in Mahkota Parade during the weekend, Wee-Peng and I dropped by the venue and I took some shots over there. Sharing some shots here:

A short trip to Maharani Community-based Rehabilitation Centre

Towards the end of year 2010, Peah-Ching, partner of Stephen Tang was preparing hampers for sale just before Chinese New Year 2011. She was hoping to help the underprivileged group before the festival season so she approached Chris Lee Ching-Yong, the Special Officer for the Chief Minister of Johor and seek for his advice.

Chris who is active in charity, told Peah-Ching to help a rehabilitation centre for handicapped children in Muar, where Peah-Ching’s hometown is. It’s Pusat Pemulihan Dalam Komuniti Maharani (in Malay, Maharani Community-based Rehabilitation Centre). Chris then told her, the centre requires support and attention of the public to maintain its service for the community. Although the centre is supported by the state government, donation of the public could help the centre to provide better study environment and improve the living of the children.

Chris suggested to Peah-Ching that each of the hamper she sells, she could donate RM5 in helping the children. She would like to know more about the centre so invited me to visit the centre together. After 40 minutes drive from Melaka, I arrived in Muar and met up with Peah-Ching and her lovely mother. Together we travelled to the centre which is not far from her house.

Providing special education to mostly dyslexic children and some with autism, the centre currently supports 54 students. We were welcome by one of the assistants, Ms. Nardia and briefed about the daily function of the centre. From what we were told, the children do not stay overnight at the centre however spend half of the day to attend classes. During weekdays, parents would send their children in the morning to the centre and pick them up in the afternoon. They will have a meal in the morning.

After doing some reading online, I came to understand that parents play a big role in helping their children. Parents usually start to panic after their children fail miserably in Year One or Two as a result of their inability to read. In fact, children with dyslexia need to be taught to read using techniques that are different from those used to teach normal kids. Maharani Community-based Rehabilitation Centre is one of the centres to provide special education to enable dyslexic children to become more successful. It’s also best that parents could sit in during the classes so that they could pick up too the correct techniques to coach their children at home.

It was rather a short trip as the children had gone home when we arrived. We didn’t manage to see how the classes are carrying out regrettably, but we are hoping to visit the centre again in the morning to understand more about the centre and the children.

Hopefully all the children are well and happy. May all beings be happy.

In addition, I have seen the hampers wrapped by Peah-Ching after we went to centre. They are really nice and presentable. If you are getting hampers for your friends or family and do charity at the same time, feel free to browse Peah-Ching’s hampers flyers for great deals. Click to enlarge and download:

Helping the mother, Wang in coma

Last Sunday, when I met Meng-Hong, he told me about a tragedy happened in a family whom he and his parents know for long. The news was published in the Sin Chew Daily last week. Then Meng-Hong did the favor of explaining the family’s situation and gave me a copy of the paper with the news. The previous post in Chinese published here was the news about the tragedy and I did a simple summary:

Two months ago, a 37 year old mother, Wang Yue-Fang collapsed during feeding her 5 month-old baby. She then felt in to a coma and the family was worry about her. Since then the scene of the happy family bacame to sorrow.

Before the tragedy happened, Wang was a responsible and hardworking housewife who took good care of her three children and household. She was in good health without any serious illness and the family lived a happy life until the sudden tragedy happened which turned everything the other way round.

Wang was admitted to the hospital immediately for emergency treatment after she had collapsed and was nearly died during the treatment. However she survived and remained unconscious in intensive care unit for 5-6 days and eventually lying in coma.

According to the doctor, Fang suffered from cerebral anoxia, and the condition wasn’t optimistic as the chance of recovery was low. The bill for the treatment before Fang discharged from the hospital hit RM130,000. This turned to be a big problem for Xue who worked as chicken rice seller in a night market. He could not afford to pay the full sum so the only thing he could do was to borrow money from relatives and friends in order to pay the bill.

Now the Wang’s familystaying in Taman Muzaffar Shah is facing a hard time. Dealing with family crisis is one of the hardest things, yet her  husband Xue Shun-An (38 year-old) never gave in to the cruel fate. He continued to seek for help and take care of the ill wife and three children.

On the other hand, Xue has to take care of the wife everyday, doing mucus suction at least 10 times a day, and tube-feeding of liquid food for Wang who couldn’t devour any food. The medicine and medical equipment for daily usage are costly. Taking care of Wang however, affects Xue’s working hours and making the living of their family even tougher.

Although the welfare officer, Wang Shi-Niang visited the family and assisted them to apply for monthly welfare support of RM300, it’s still insufficient and more aids are needed. The MCA Bukit Katil Division Chairman, Yang Huan-Yuan said that they had opened a joint name account of three names to receive donation and funding from public, and one of the names is Wang’s husbang, Xue Shun-An. The MCA Melaka State Legal Bureau Chairman, Wang Miao-Xia said MCA will continue monitor the account to ensure its transparency and proper use for Wang’s medical and living expenses.

Donation of public can be made to the joint name account for helping Wang:

Bank: Public Bank
Account name: Seet Soon Ann
Account number: 3164127807

Any enquire about the donation, feel free to contact the following person as stated in the Sin Chew Daily newspaper:

1.) MCA Bukit Katil Division Chairman, Yang Huan-Yuan (012-6821511)
2.) MCA Bandar Baru Ayer Keroh Branch Chairman, Wang Chun-Cheng (019-6563878)
3.) MCA Crisis Relief Squad Bukit Katil Division Chairman, Lai Zhi-Qiang (012-6362239)

For people who know me and wish to help Wang, you are welcome to pass the money to me and I will be sending the money to them latest by next Sunday (12/12/2010).

I apologise for any mistake in the translation. Thank you for your attention and kindness. May all beings be happy.

Donation of garbage bags to Handicapped and Mentally Disabled Children Centre Melaka

garbage bags made from 100% recycled plastics for the Handicapped and Mentally Disabled Children Centre Melaka

The last time Argen and Cindy invited me to the Handicapped and Mentally Disabled Children Centre Melaka, Amy the nurse requested for heap of garbage bag. Since the centre is the shelter for many handicapped children, everyday it produces large amount of rubbish such as food waste, used diapers, etc. Amy then hopes that we could bring many of large garbage bags for the centre. We were told to hand the bags to her directly so that she could administrate the use of the bags in the centre.

Early this week while I had some free time, I purchased twenty bags of ten garbage bags made from 100% recycled plastics and handed to the centre’s management. We hope that it would help the centre to manage the waste better and keep it as hygiene and clean as possible for the children and staff living there.

Thanks to our kind friends for the contribution for helping the children. We are committing our ongoing support and love that we hope will be able to contribute to the wellbeing of the children.

May all beings be happy.
