Kombi on the street of Melaka town

While assisting my friend Kenn for a product shooting yesterday in the busy town of Melaka, I couldn’t resist capturing the beauty of the street of my own hometown even though I had only my iPad.

Kenn was shooting from morning with our clients Lily and Eunice. We started at the area close to the stage of Jonker Street, then headed to Jonker Street World Heritage Park, the place which has a huge copper-made statue of formal body builder from Melaka, Datuk Wira Gan Boon Leong. There are also a couple of statues of dragon, buffalo, and elephant. Kenn joked that these creatures represents Gan Boon Leong’s pets at his house.

We got a couple of product shots over here, and moved on to Voyage Travellers Lounge. We a break, enjoyed the cozy atmosphere of the cafe and had some refreshing fruit juice.

Kenn then continued his shooting around Lorong Hang Jebat. While taking care of our gears at the cafe for Kenn, I too walked around there and snap some street shots with iPad. I always love this part of the the town which covers Jalan Tukang Besi and Jalan Tukang Emas which we can find many nice guesthouses, cafes and pubs such as Voyage Travellers Lounge and Shantaram Bar, and souvenir shops like the unique Orangutan House. The streets never fail to surprise me for everytime I visit.

Since I came back from Vietnam in early August, I didn’t have time to do street photography. Hopefully after these few months of busy and peak weddings period, I can equip myself with DSLR and return to the street and capture my beautiful town and friendly people on the street.

Please do not forget to help the super Typhoon Haiyan’s victims in Philippines by supporting with some donation to UNICEF, Red Crescent, or Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation. Details of donation to UNICEF can be found on my previous post. Please pray for the victims in Philippines and may the departed souls rest in peace.

Hope you like the shots of Melaka town taken with my iPad and have a good weekend. May all beings bEE happy.

<简单玩 。玩简单 Just Play> in Melaka at Voyage Travellers Lounge

Went to a very nice music concert <简单玩 。玩简单 Just Play> featuring Ika & Aki Huang, Platform 11, Tangerine Wong and Anna Chong, happened to be in Melaka at Voyage Travellers Lounge early this month.

Simple setup in the lounge which closed for business. Instead of sitting on chairs or standing, tables and chairs were removed from the lounge and guests were encouraged to wear casually, especially with shorts, any kind of shorts as theme, and sitting on the floor.

So before the show started, 988’s DJ, PM shared his story with the guests to get everyone warmed up. Then things got started with Aki’s voice cheering up the night, followed by the rest of the vocals and bands.

It all ended at about 1:00am in the morning. The artists put on a great show and really connected with the guests, songs were sung with a load of feeling and passion.

They will keep going and tour around Malaysia and Singapore for performance. Just an update, the ticket for their next stop in KL on 30th August are sold out. Only two stops available now which are Kluang, Johor on our Merdeka Day and Singapore on the 1st of September.

Support our local artists and please drop by the tour’s facebook page for more information.

Pay Fong High School, founded in 1913 and being the only Chinese Independent School in my hometown Melaka was celebrating celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. I was invited by my friend Chow-Gui, the teacher of Pay Fong String Orchestra to observe the night celebration at its hall.

It was great to be there and photographed the performance. Congratulation to Pay Fong High School.

May all bEEings be happy.

At 8:30 p.m. today, people around the world will celebrate Earth Hour by turning off their lights for one hour in a symbolic show of support for the planet. Earth Hour brings awareness to climate change and symbolizes a commitment and concern for managing climate change. Started nine years ago, the movement now spans thousands of cities in countries around the globe.

Earth Hour raises awareness and provides a unique opportunity for collective action aimed at doing something positive for the environment. It is not just about saving energy for that one hour, but it symbolizes a concern for managing climate change and commitment to adopting environment-friendly practices and habits in everyday life.

So let us participate in the Earth Hour, not only to conserve energy but to raise awareness on the need to protect the environment.

Sharing some of the shots taken in year 2012. May all beings bEE happy.

Melaka Art & Performance Festival 2012 (21st Sept)

By Beautiful Melaka, Photography
Melaka Arts and Performance Festival 2012

Melaka Arts and Performance Festival 2012

I guess this will be the top priority to do a post up so that people are not going to miss this great festival happening in Melaka this weekend (21, 22 and 23 September 2012). This will be the quick introduction from the event website.

Melaka Arts and Performance Festival (MAPFest) is an innovative contemporary festival, featuring dance, performance art, visual art, film and music. In a short space of time since its inception in 2009, MAPFest has gained a high national, and increasingly international profile, being recognised for its program of exciting independent arts, collaborations and its use of alternative sites for performance.

The festival draws from Melaka’s foundation myth, its famous heritage sites, and Melaka’s collective ancestral heritage to create a space where contemporary culture and artistic practice comes into focus and is shared across cultural and socio-economic divides in a three day celebration which remains free to all.

‘Turning Around’ – transformation through the creative drive – remains the central inspiration for the festival, connecting both to the foundation myth for Melaka, and the festival’s objective of assisting contemporary arts to play a role in Melaka’s revival alongside its heritage-driven tourist industry. This year the specific focus within that broad theme is the traces of transformation.

We are also pleased to have a new stage to showcase the richness of traditional Malaysian and international performance. In the future we hope to initiate crosspollination of contemporary and traditional practice.

MAPFest remains free and accessible for all. Continuing Melaka’s rich history as a centre for meetings and exchange between cultures, it will create opportunities for artists and art lovers to share in each others’ work and perspectives.

We hope you enjoy the festival!

Today marks the first day of the event. I went to the first program in the schedule which was Afro-contemporary dance by Appiah Annan of Asanti Dance Theatre. Held at St Paul’s Hill of Melaka, the dance workshop was best to start off as it was really cool and you could feel the energy when listening to the rhythm of djembe drum.

During the dance workshop I met an old friend, Sister Bi-Ching and she is an art and culture lover. She loves to take photos too. After telling me the schedule of the event which I didn’t know the program initially, we decided to visit other venues.

So there are other four venues besides St Paul’s Hill, for film screening and installations for these three days:

  • Baboon House (86 Heeren Street a.k.a. Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock)
  • No. 8 Heeren Street Heritage Centre (8 Heeren Street a.k.a. Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock)
  • Riverine Restaurant (108 Lorong Hang Jebat)
  • Film Screening (24 Jalan Kg Kuli)

We continued to visit other venues for other programs such as the Melaka River – video projection by Noelene Lucas at Riverine Restaurant, short films at Jalan Kg Kuli, Corner – video installation by Khaled Sabsabi at No. 8 Heeren Street Heritage Centre, and installations at Baboon House. And Baboon House was the last stop we went. Feeling exhausted, we headed back to rest and recharge so that we could continue the program at night on the hill again.

Immediately after I reached home, I did a quick edit of the photos and posted on Facebook so that more people especially the locals, will know about this event and could participate. After posting, I rushed to St Paul’s Hill. Though I missed the first performance, I was still glad I made it as soon as I could.

St Paul’s Church was so crowded and lively with the lighting tonight. I managed to watch four performance arts (by TonyYap & BrendanO’Connor, Alan Schacher & Wei Zen Ho, Appiah Annan, I Nyoman Sura) before I had to leave for picking up parents. The performances were truly profound and uplifting. The photos speak.

So dear Malaccans, don’t miss the opportunity to take part in this event and there will be more programs on Saturday (22nd Sept) and Sunday (23rd Sept). All the programs can be found at the official website of MAP Fest.

Hope you enjoy the photos and may all beings bEE happy.
