It’s has been a while since we visited the Handicapped and Mentally Disabled Children Centre Melaka. For the past few weeks, I received calls from friends and they told me that they would like to be involved in helping the less fortunate people. I was so touched by their kindness and giving nature. Decided to go to the centre again this Sunday, we are collecting goods from friends such as clothing and books for the children. On top of that, we hope to get some new friends and their family members to come along and make it even more significant.

Venue: Handicapped and Mentally Disabled Children Centre Melaka

Grace Groner was orphaned when she was 12 and lived simply until passing away at age 100 in January. Grace left the world a better place, at least her little corner of it.

Groner, a secret millionaire, left her entire estate worth $7-million-dollars to her alma mater, Lake Forest College in Illinois.

In 1935, Groner purchased $180 stock in Abbott Laboratories – where she worked as a secretary for 43 years –  and, thanks to her frugal lifestyle and thoughtful investing, Grace amassed a $7-million-dollar fortune in the last 75 years.

Grace lived in Lake Forest in a modest one bedroom cottage with plain furnishings, mismatched dishes and a decades-old television set. She bought her clothes at rummage sales and walked instead of driving.

Grace had already donated $180,000 to a scholarship program at the liberal arts school.

“Oh my God,” was the reaction of Lake Forest College president Stephen Schutt upon learning the amount of Groner’s generous donation. Schutt reportedly knew that Grace intended to leave money to the college however, until her death, he had no idea how large the gift would be.

Grace’s money will help Lake Forest’s 1,300 students take internships and study abroad – experiences that many of them would never have had without her help.

Her little home was also donated to the college and will be used to house recipients of scholarships from the foundation. The house has been named “Grace’s Cottage,” in honor of a woman filled with grace.

[News] Russian oligarch to donate fortune to charity

Hyderabad, Feb. 3: Following the footseps of Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, Russian billionaire Vladimir Potanin plans to donate his entire fortune after his death, the Russian agency RIA Novosti quoted Mr Potanin from an interview with The Financial Times.

The Russian Tycoon says, “Large inheritances can kill heirs,” adding “a million [dollars] handed over

from inheritance helps a person to receive a good education, find employment without haste and find himself. A transferred billion [dollars] kills him and deprives him of the sense of life”.

He made his fortune during the loans-for-shares auctions in the mid-1990s when Russia’s cash-strapped government sold the country’s biggest industrial assets for a song, Mr Potanin he had not made up his mind yet on specific charitable projects. He has a daughter and two sons.

His step comes after repeated requests by the Russian President, Mr Dmitry Medvedev, and the Prime Minister, Mr Vladimir Putin, urging businessmen to spend money on charitable projects.

“My children are growing up, their father is a billionaire and a well-known guy. They, for one, are in my shadow, and secondly what motivation in life do they have to achieve something?” he said.

“In this sense, I consider it a very correct step to hand over one’s fortune for the service of society and not for inheritance. I am going to follow the example of (Bill) Gates and (Warren) Buffet.”
