Portrait photography – meeting Pansy

Pansy, the model who gave her time to us for portraiture photography

Pansy, the model who gave her time to us for portraiture photography

After the Starbizz’s Shooting Date event at Dataran Pahlawan last Sunday, Kenn-Wai, Angel and I went for a coffee at the Old Town Cafe. We shared the shots we took for the event with each other, and taking advices from others to improve our shots.

Kenn-Wai, who does a lot of portrait photography, shared his valuable portraiture photography experience with us. We were so motivated and wanted to put this into practical. While brainstorming for a subject to shoot, Angel’s friend, Pansy came and joined us for the coffee session. Straight away we invited her to be our model.

We then moved to an open area of Dataran Pahlawan, and the four of us had a short discussion of our camera, the area and atmosphere, light sources, and the posture of model. It’s essential to study this before shooting. Although this was not a planned photography session but it was so fun to learn and to spend time with friends.

We had to thank Pansy for sparing her time with us, and of course being patient with us. Special thanks to Kenn-Wai and Angel for their company and sharing their experience which benefits me so much. May everyone be happy. Sharing some shots after the jump:

Portrait photography – Xiao Bao

Xiao-Bao the kitty on couch

Xiao-Bao the kitty on couch

Since my mom adopts and provides shelter to unwanted cats, I always wanted to have portraits of these cats. I was however being lazy and so missed out many opportunities to get the best moments of these adorable cats.

At last I got a chance today. While I have some free time, I saw Xiao-Bao (Chinese, which means little precious), one of my family’s favorite kitties lying lazily on the couch. It came to my mind suddenly to snap photos of a kitty. Immediately setting up the table lamp and using a white board as a reflector, I was preparing to snap some photos of Xiao-Bao while it still didn’t know what I was trying to do.

Unlike human, taking photos of pets is not easy; pets won’t pose to camera. And if you force it to, it would become irritated and try to escape from you. Patience is definitely virtue and no doubt when it comes to photographing pets. Too there is an advantage of photographing pets, they are ‘naturally’ natural.

When I was photographing Xiao-Bao, I had to keep it as comfortable and at ease as possible, and waited for best moments to press the shutter. Initially the light source irritated Xiao-Bao and it tried to run away from the couch. Fortunately, my mom and sister helped me to pamper and calm the kitty while I tried to capture its photos.

I took my time and enjoyed this session. Eventually Xiao-Bao became tired and fall asleep, then I took a few shots of its nap and ended the shooting. The shots turn out to be ok, but there is space of improvement which can help me sharpen my skill in pet’s portrait photography in future.

Special thanks to Xiao-Bao although it might not know what was going on, and also my mom and sister for helping me. May all beings be happy.

Studio photography – meet Celine

By Photography

A week before Chinese New Year, I went for a studio shooting together with Nick, James and other photonians to the Hananica Studio. It’s a photography studio located in Taman Kota Laksamana and well equipped with lighting equipment. Celine was the model invited and showed her expertise in modelling. She posed well and gave us so much cooperation with her happy smile all the time.

We would have to thank Nick and James, who were teaching us to setup the background and the lighting for the shooting. They are more experience in studio shooting than anyone of us; however they were willing to share their knowledge with us and telling us the importance of communication between the photographer and the model.

Post-processing would be another hard part to work out since most photos were taken in RAW format. Below are some of my shots after processing:
